Child Playing with Toy Birds and Doll - School of Jessie Willcox Smith
Located in Miami, FL
Anna Milo Upjohn was an overlooked female illustrator in the school of Jessie Willcox Smith. Her work displays a deep academic knowledge evident in her stylized illustrations of children and engaging their world. Signed lower right- 'A.M.UPJOHN" unframed. She was an assignment artist for renowned women's publications such as The Woman's Home Companion and children's books, as well as commercial assignments.s for the Red Cross. Unframed Anna Milo Upjohn (1868–1951) was an American artist, illustrator, author, and relief worker who, late in her long career, became known for paintings, drawings, and illustrations she made for the American Red Cross. After graduating from high school, she studied art briefly in New York but obtained most of her training in Paris from Claudio Castelucho and Lucien Simon.[1] In the early years of the twentieth century, she became known both for her portraits and paintings of children and for her book and magazine illustrations. Finding herself in France at the outset of the First World War, she devoted herself to relief work first among the refugees in Paris and later among the devastated villages in France and Belgium. Having spent the first half of her adult life as an independent professional, she served as a staff artist for the American Red Cross between 1921 and 1931. She traveled extensively during her adult life and lived mostly in New York City; Ithaca, New York; and Washington, D.C. Early life and training During the 1870s, Upjohn's family lived with her grandfather, a well-known architect named Richard Upjohn who had retired to a scenic home in Garrison, New York. Richard Upjohn's biographer says when she was about five she would accompany him as he sketched and painted. She questioned him about his color choices and learned that artists often chose colors different from the ones present in the subjects they painted. He also showed her engravings of famous paintings, explaining what made them great and where they fell short in his view.[2] Her family was living in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin when she graduated from high school in 1887.[3] A few years later, the family moved to New York, where, in the early 1890s, she took classes at the Cooper Union Woman's Art School.[4] She began her foreign travels in 1893 and during the next few years studied art in Munich, Florence, and Paris.[5] In 1902, she took an illustration class at the National Academy of Design and the following year won the Academy's Suydam silver medal for her work.[6] Between 1909 and 1912, she studied and traveled in Europe's other major cities.[7] In 1922, Upjohn told a reporter that she had studied art "in many places, usually for a few months at a time and disconnectedly, but what counted most was the work she did in Paris under Castelucho and Lucien Simon.”[1] Born in Barcelona, Castelucho's birth name was Claudi Catelucho Diana, but he went by his surname alone. In Paris during the early years of the twentieth century, he and Simon both trained private students and both taught at two mondernist alternatives to the École des Beaux Arts: the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.[8] Upjohn did not say whether she took private lessons, classes, or both. Career in art Image No. 1, Anna Milo Upjohn, Young Boy Going Fishing, 1910, oil on canvas, 25 x 30 inches In 1890, at the age of twenty-one, Upjohn completed a painting of angels for St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Her uncle Richard M. Upjohn had designed the building and her father was currently its rector (having succeeded John Henry Hobart Brown...

"The Artist's Portrait'
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Presenting a magnificent, early original pastel, "The Artist's Portrait", by American artist Robert McIntosh. "The Artist's Portrait", is an original pastel on artist's paper, signed, dated 1937, 13 x 9.75, currently unframed, the portrait was acquired directly from the personal collection of the artist. We have included the artist's biography below please contact the gallery for additional information, Robert McIntosh (1916-2010) Robert McIntosh was born on March 11, 1916 near San Francisco, in Vallejo, California, the second son of Harry and Jesusita Coronado McIntosh. He found his lifelong passion for painting by the time he was ten years old and never swayed from his calling. The family moved to Stockton when Robert was 12. Their home was just six blocks from the newly opened Haggin Museum, filled with a treasure trove of European and American paintings. He became particularly enamored with the fine examples of 19th century French pastoral landscapes. As teens, Robert and his brother Harrison befriended local painter Arthur Haddock who taught them the craft of art and brought them along on outdoor painting trips. Robert also became skilled at drawing portraits that captured the subject's personality. Soon, the sheer joy of expressing himself this way became a consuming interest. When not sketching, McIntosh would wander the stacks of books at the public library, discovering and studying the Masters - in particular, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Whistler. At a Gauguin exhibit at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Robert discovered a "whole new world of color" and the importance of designing the space in the eternal rectangle. "I envision a frame around everything I see, "he admitted. "The artists' challenge is to put something meaningful, interesting or beautiful in that space." In 1934 McIntosh won a competition for a scholarship to the Art Center School of Design, the first award they ever bestowed. The entire family moved to Los Angeles and a new vista opened to the young artist, both visually and culturally. Robert began to take on portrait commissions and had exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Art, The Oakland Museum of Art and the Crocker Museum of Art in Sacramento. During the Great Depression, Robert began to work at Disney Studios painting backgrounds for such classics as "Fantasia". Ron Barbagallo, of Animation Art...

Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. An artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art Gallery in Milan, while maintaining connections with important galleries, such as Marlborough Fine Art in London and Galerie Koch in Hanover. Portrait of Jean Claude Pellegrini (1787-1854)
Located in PARIS, FR
François Jean SABLET (Morges, 1745 – Nantes, 1819) Portrait of Jean Claude Pellegrini (1787-1854) Honorary Divisional Inspector of Bridges and Roads. Oil on canvas Monogrammed and dated lower right 30x25cm 1819 Painter of portraits, Jean François Sablet, originally from Morges, born November 23, 1745, is the eldest son of Jacob Sablet (1720–1798), bourgeois of this city, house painter, gilder, art dealer, and Suzanne Dupuis (1722–1775), settled in Lausanne from 1754. In 1767, on June 8, he prepared to leave to “improve in the art of painting” with a viaticum from the Council of Morges and a scholarship from Bern. In Paris, he was a pupil of Joseph-Marie Vien at the Royal Academy (1768–73). In 1772, he was joined by his younger brother Jacques, who in 1776 left for Rome to pursue a brilliant career there. François, he remains in Paris, goes almost unnoticed there having neither competed, nor received a prize, nor even exhibited. In 1774, he signed and dated the Portrait of the Count of Artois, as Colonel-General of the Swiss and Graubünden. In 1777, he married Marie Madeleine Borel, daughter of a wood merchant, and settled near the Quinze-Vingt at the Bastille, as a portrait painter. He entered the Masonic lodge of Celestial Friendship and therefore enjoyed a certain notoriety. He executed the portrait of Charles-Henri, Comte d'Estaing, engraved by Charles-Etienne Gaucher (1779). In 1781, L. Perrot reproduced two of his works from the cabinet of Madame de Saint-Maurice, Childhood in the Countryside and Visit to the Nurse, for the philanthropic society founded in particular by Louis d'Affry, captain of the Swiss Guards. . In addition to the fact that these subjects denote an ideal of benevolence under the aegis of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, they testify to relations with the Swiss milieu. Finally, the format and quality of two large full-length portraits Vestal pouring incense (1781) and the Offering to Hymen (1783) reflect her favor in society on the eve of the Revolution and, although in shadow, he is able to build life annuities. From this first stage are dated two sketchbooks in black chalk and red chalk of characters, interior scenes, theatrical evocations, including the Vestal Virgin pouring incense. He also signed a series of wash illustrations relating to mythology and other subjects taken from Ovid. In 1789, the political climate suddenly darkened, the amateurs left, dragging the artists with them. François Sablet took the road to Switzerland and, in January 1792, joined his brother in Rome, a genre painter in Italian costumes and portraits in nature called "conversation pieces", models from which François was to draw inspiration. François spent the summer in Genzano in the Roman countryside, where he also devoted himself to landscape and popular costumes. Beat d'Hennezel, their compatriot, evokes the evenings at the Sablets' with their artist friends, busy drawing portraits while exchanging heated remarks on the political situation. However, the events in Paris had repercussions in Rome. In January 1793 the French representative was assassinated, the French and other French speakers...
