Dimensions: 73 × 60 cm (28.7 × 23.6 in)
Signature: Signed lower left: Pau Valls
Period: Circa 1960–70s

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
The painting depicts a young gypsy woman in a relaxed pose, seated on the ground with an absent, almost melancholic gaze. Her light green dress, speckled with white, falls naturally in broad folds that contrast with the blue vest. The artist renders the texture of the fabrics with loose, luminous brushstrokes, while the face and hands are modeled with precision, conveying intimacy and expressive strength.
The composition evokes a sense of contained stillness and introspection, in line with postwar Catalan figurative painting, which sought to capture the quiet dignity of humble, everyday subjects.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Pau Valls Cañellas (Barcelona, 1935) first trained at the Valls Academy, directed by his father Nolasc Valls, and later continued his studies at the Massana School and the Higher School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi.
Throughout his career, he carried out significant mural painting projects in churches and convents across Catalonia, while also dedicating himself to easel painting. His first solo exhibition took place in 1977 at Galería Grifé & Escoda (Barcelona).
In 1983 he exhibited at the Salon des Nations in Paris, and in 1984 he joined the Société Internationale d’Art Figuratif (SIAF), which enabled him to showcase his work in France, Germany, and the United States. In 1986 he exhibited in Tokyo and Osaka through the French Embassy. His career includes numerous exhibitions across Spain, and his works are held in private collections in Europe, America, and Japan.
His figurative style is distinguished by its ability to convey atmosphere and psychological depth in his sitters, as well as by the detailed material treatment of fabrics and objects.
COMPARABLE INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS
For his intimate and psychological figurative approach, Pau Valls’s work can be compared to:
Isidre Nonell (Spain): for his focus on gypsy and marginalized models, though Valls is more lyrical and less dramatic.
Anders Zorn (Sweden): for the naturalism of his portraits and mastery of light on skin.
Joaquín Sorolla (Spain): for the treatment of fabrics and freshness of brushstroke, though Valls employs more restrained color.
Andrew Wyeth (USA): for chromatic sobriety and the introspective strength of his figures.
José Royo (Spain) and Emili Grau Sala (Spain): for their sensitivity to the female portrait and Mediterranean color harmony.

"Seated Girl" is an oil on canvas portrait of an artist who was cut down in his prime and largely forgotten until recently. Marvin Cherney's paintings are solemn but unsophisticated in his subjects. He deploys a more limited range of greyed colors in order to emotionalize his subject and heighten the mood of their isolation. This painting was one of the thirteen that was exhibited at Garelick's Gallery in Detroit from January 8th through January 21st in 1961. The painting is 34.75 x 22.5 inches unframed.
Marvin Cherney was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1925. He attended the Maryland Institute of Art and the School for Art Studies in New York. After his graduation he began to travel around Europe before returnig to New York.

Gypsy girl, 1947. Oil on canvas, 34x37 cm
By Jadviga Zjilvinska
Located in Riga, LV
Jadviga Žilvinska (1918-2010) was born in Tallinn.
She grew up in Liepāja, where her great interest in art began and strengthened, which led the young artist to study at the Art Academy of Latvia. During her studies at the Academy, she studied with K. Ubāns, V. Tone and J. Liepiņš, and defended her diploma thesis under the guidance of L. Liberts. Later on, she devoted her entire life to art, working at the Liepāja School of Fine Arts and as a portraitist at the "Māksla" combine.
She had four favourite themes: landscapes, portraits, flowers and sacred painting. Her works have lyricism and inner harmony. In the portraits, we see not only the outer form of a person, but the artist allows us to look into the very essence of a person - it is likely that the models themselves often saw something new and bright in themselves through the artist's vision.
The works are executed in various techniques - tempera, oil, pastel and watercolour.

1938 - Graduated from the Liepaja Secondary School of Applied Arts, Department of Decorative Painting.
1943 - Latvian Academy of Art, L. Liberts Figurative Painting Workshop with her diploma work "At the Artist's"
