Richard WILSON Circa 1780 Canvas Size: 28 x 38" (71 x 97cm) Outside Frame Size: 42 x 52" (107 x 132cm) Free Shipping A chance to acquire a rare piece by Richard Wilson. This imposing antique piece would require a substantial viewing area to appreciate its subtlety and depth. 1713 – 1782 The classic master of British 18th Century landscape he was born in Penegoes, Wales on 1 August and died in Mold, Wales on 11 May He trained at first as a portrait painter in London under T. Wright and by 1744 was making a living as a Portrait painter although he had started to try landscape painting. In 1750 he travelled to Venice and then travelled to Rome where he gave up portraiture in favour of landscapes. He studied the works of Poussin and Claude and in the five years that he was in Rome he painted many classical scenes around Naples. He returned to England and became a founder member of the Society of Artists of Britain and later the Royal Academy, where he exhibited from 1769 – 1780 He was endlessly copied and he himself often painted the same scene more than once and after his health deteriorated he returned to his native Wales. His works have been in most major museums throughout the UK
