In his Landscape painting’s James finds a constantly engaging conversation, a dialogue between light, air, and the earth. The subject has been a fascination which has established his reputation and crucial in developing his painting philosophy. These works are not of specific topography or familiar sites, it is James’ intention that they are a culmination of his experiences, memories and imagination.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
James has been a professional Artist since 1998. Producing oil paintings from Bolton studio(UK) he has created a unique vision of Landscape painting. He has established his reputation through a consistent determination to make art. Trusting instincts which result in emotive experiences for him and the viewer. His work emerges from three preoccupations, light, landscape and the nature of paint, these combine to result in paintings that link tradition and a modern visual experience. James values direct observation, as a traditional way to record the Landscape but is also drawn to communicating the interplay between what we see and our imagination, forging bonds between experience and mythology. His process does not normally involve preparation, sketching or photography, he finds that inviting the natural movement of oil paint to suggest the direction of a work, in an intuitive way, provides the most exciting challenge. James has exhibited widely in the UK and at numerous acclaimed international Art Fairs. Recently his personal interest in the art of Thomas Moran led to an ambitious Arts Council funded project and included a two week road trip in Yellowstone, National Park, The Teton Range and Green River(Wyoming USA) . The project culminated in an extensive exhibition in the public art gallery of his home town Bolton. Kerry Louise Bennett, artist and painter, has original artworks available with Wychwood Art in our gallery and online. Working from her home studio in Sheffield, Kerry Louise Bennett (b.1972) makes colourful paintings loaded with texture and pattern. Her previous lives working in set design, upholstery and photography, and her passion for music and literature, all feed into the semi-abstract interior and still life compositions she paints. In one sense the objects painted and the relationships between them can be seen as arbitrary, necessary only to serve a sense of spatial orchestration, and the abstract sensibility of a process-led artist, however, an element of romance and storytelling always seems to emerge in her charming characterful paintings. Colour and composition, strong mark-making and the pure materiality of paint drive my creative practice, but of course everything I make reveals something of me - the introvert, the observer, the dreamer. I work over multiple layers before finding the story the painting wants to tell. In some ways I feel like the conductor of an unruly orchestra - there is a musicality to my work, and my visual vocabulary draws on the everyday to capture a kind of unconscious narrative that transforms chaos into calm, worry into joy, the mundane to the magical. Kerry says of herself: I am obsessed with colour first and foremost – it’s impact is so visceral, but mark making is also important – usually expressed through pattern and the shapes of things often scratched into the surface of the paint, with textures then built up over many layers. Sophia is a Fine Art Contemporary Wildlife and Nature Artist, specialising in high quality oil paintings. Known for her powerfully evocative paintings created through vibrant colours, light and intricate detail, with some of her art embellished with 24ct Gold and Silver leaf and it has been said many times to have “a spiritual feel to it”. The creative journey began at Winchester school of Art where she completed her BA specialising in Textile design. His work emerges from three preoccupations, light, landscape and the nature of paint, these combine to result in paintings that link tradition and a modern visual experience. James values direct observation, as a traditional way to record the Landscape but is also drawn to communicating the interplay between what we see and our imagination, forging bonds between experience and mythology. His process does not normally involve preparation, sketching or photography, he finds that inviting the natural movement of oil paint to suggest the direction of a work, in an intuitive way, provides the most exciting challenge. James has exhibited widely in the UK and at numerous acclaimed international Art Fairs. Recently his personal interest in the art of Thomas Moran led to an ambitious Arts Council funded project and included a two week road trip in Yellowstone, National Park, The Teton Range and Green River(Wyoming USA) . Still-life paintings work as part of the decor in nearly every type of space.
Still-life art, which includes work produced in media such as painting, photography, video and more, is a popular genre in Western art. However, the depiction of still life in color goes back to Ancient Egypt, where paintings on the interior walls of tombs portrayed the objects — such as food — that a person would take into the afterlife. Ancient Greek and Roman mosaics and pottery also often depicted food. Indeed, still-life paintings frequently feature food, flowers or man-made objects. By definition, still-life art represents anything that is considered inanimate.
During the Middle Ages, the still life genre was adapted by artists who illustrated religious manuscripts. A common theme of these paintings is the reminder that life is fleeting. This is especially true of vanitas, a kind of still life with roots in the Netherlands during the 17th century, which was built on themes such as death and decay and featured skulls and objects such as rotten fruit. In northern Europe during the 1600s, painters consulted botanical texts to accurately depict the flowers and plants that were the subject of their work.
Leonardo da Vinci’s penchant for observing phenomena in nature and filling notebooks with drawings and notes helped him improve as an artist of still-life paintings. Vincent van Gogh, an artist who made a couple of the most expensive paintings ever sold, carried out rich experiments with color over the course of painting hundreds of still lifes, and we can argue that Campbell’s Soup Cans (1961–62) by Andy Warhol counts as still-life art.
While early examples were primarily figurative, you can find still lifes that belong to different schools and styles of painting, such as Cubism, Impressionism and contemporary art.
