About the Item

A fine pastel still life with a bowl of fruit by Icelandic-American artist Louisa Matthiasdottir (1917-2000). Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, Louisa was known for her portraits, self portraits, still lifes, interiors, and Icelandic landscapes, all distinguished by their simple, geometric shapes and flat planes of crisp color, bold color. She came to New York in 1942 and had her first solo show at the Jane Street Gallery in 1948. Shortly after her arrival in the United States, she met Leland Bell, whom she married in 1944. Sometimes they had double exhibitions together, and both showed at Robert Schoelkopf Gallery where she had seventeen solo shows between 1964 and 1991. Pastel on paper, signed in graphite lower right, matted and framed under glass in a simple wooden frame, titled “Bowl of Fruit” and dated 1983 on three gallery labels on verso, including Robert Schoelkopf Gallery (New York), The Members Gallery,Albright- Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, NY), and Anderson Gallery (Buffalo, NY).
