Maurice Brianchon was a French Impressionist & Modern painter.
Brianchon studied in Bordeaux at the École des Beaux-Arts under Paul Quinsac, a sculptor; in 1917 he moved to Paris and entered the École des Beaux Arts Decoratifs where he trained under Eugène Morand. He first exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1920 and by 1922 was a committee member of the same Salon. In 1924 he won the Prix Blumenthal and a travel scholarship that he used to tour Spain. In 1939 he was awarded the Carnegie Prize.
Brianchon executed murals for the Conservatoire de Musique et d'Art Dramatique de Paris, the Lycée Janson-de-Sailly and the Palais de Chaillot, tapestry designs for the Aubusson and Gobelins ateliers, and book illustrations including Andre Gide's 'Theatre Complet.' He also was an accomplished stage designer, working on costumes and sets for Fausses Confidences and La Seconde Surprise de l'Amour' by Marivaux. He became well known for his theater and ballet decors for the Paris Opera, as well as his intimate depictions of Parisian society, parks and gardens. He was appointed member of the selective Committee of the Salon d’Automne, and in 1934, represented France at the Venice Biennale, winning the coveted Carnegie Prize. In 1946, he was awarded the prestigious Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, was given a solo exhibition at the Wildenstein Gallery in London and had a major retrospective at the Louvre in 1951. The following year, Brianchon was selected as one of the official artists of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in England. His application of saturated, unmodulated areas of contrasting colors accentuates forms that appear to flatten against the pictorial surface. His work is in the manner of modernism and post impressionism. Brianchon’s harmonious composition contains a temporal, modernist quality that resonates with viewers and heightens its contemplative nature. Brianchon was influenced by artists such as Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. Brianchon however stylistically stayed wedded to an esthetic that looked back, and like Pablo Picasso at that time, could be called neoclassical. Mostly known for oil painting, active alongside his wife Marguerite Louppe, Brianchon did create a number lithograph works with Mourlot, mostly of society milling about. Because of his limited output, his prints are quite scarce. Brianchon’s fame grew later in life as his work started finding its way to the United States and Japan. He taught at the Ecole National Supérieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, along with Raymond-Jean Legueult Jules Cavailles and François Desnoyer and Roland Oudot. Jean Jansem, Rene Genis and Pierre Bisiaux were amongst his students.
He is one of the important members of the French New Figurative Art.
He has showed with Bernard Buffet, Tony Agostini, Maurice Sarthou, Paul Rebeyrolle, Roger Edgar Gillet, Henri Devieux, René Margotton, Andre Marchand, Henri Plisson, Guy Bardone, Maurice Brianchon, Jean Calogero.

Maurice Brianchon
Maurice Brianchon (French, 1899–1979) was born in 1899 in the village of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe to Parisian parents. After a classical education, he began his official art training at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1917. Early public recognition of his talent came when, at the age of 23, he was appointed a member of the committee of the Salon d’Automne. The following year he won the Prix Blumenthal which enabled him to live in Spain for a time where he studied the paintings of the Spanish Masters, with a particular interest in Diego Velásquez.

Jean Chaleye (French 1878 - 1960) was active, lived in France.
Jean Chaleye is known for Landscape, still life and coastal view painting.
Considered one of the most important Post Impressionist painters.
Jean-Baptiste Chaleye, known as Joannès Chaleyé, was born to working class parents in Saint Etienne in the middle of the 19th Century. He began his career as a commercial engraver at the age of fourteen, which he continued until 1899 when he took a trip to England. He returned the following year to do his military service and on completion returned to the city of his birth. He began his artistic training in Saint Etienne and then at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon in 1896. He was then offered the opportunity to complete his training in Paris. In 1899, he joined the class of Louvrier de Lajolais at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and was also a student of Fernand Cormon at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Through Cormon he me Andre Derain, Mary Cassatt and Dunoyer de Segonzac and a number of ther Barbizon painters influenced by Edouard Manet.
Jean Chaleye's life is divided between his attraction for painting and his passion for the art of lace. As early as 1902, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français and the Salon des indépendants. As a renowned painter of flowers, several museums acquired his paintings such as the cities of Puy-en-Velay, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Gall in Switzerland. In 1903, Louvrier de Lajolais offered him to go to the provinces to teach the art of lacemaking at the École pratique de commerce et d'industrie du Puy-en-Velay. He then set out to replace the traditional geometric and repetitive designs by creations with supple and light forms, inspired by local flora. He devoted his entire life to highlighting the delicate art of lace making, participating in various competitions and international exhibitions during which he won several awards. Appointed director of the National Superior School of Arts and Textile Industries of Roubaix in 1930 but also artistic director of the school of laces of Bailleul, he favors the obtaining by this last one of the Grand Prix at the Exhibition of Brussels in 1935. Promoted to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor in 1937, his involvement in the recognition of the know-how of the Velay lace industry is recognized. A renowned painter, one recognizes in his paintings as in his lace drawings all the delicacy and the love which he carries to the flowers and to the nature in general. He died in 1960 in Puy-en-Velay. After his death, the house in which he had lived in Puy was turned into the Musée Chaleyé.
International exhibitions
In 1904, he had the "Lace" section participate in the exhibition at the Galliera Museum in Paris, which presented the lace made according to his ideas. In 1905, he created the fan leaf for the lacemaker Oudin, which was purchased by the Saint-Gall Museum in Switzerland. He participated in various international competitions and exhibitions, during which he received several awards:
International Exhibition of Liège (1905): he created a fan leaf decorated with Virginia creeper which took part in this exhibition.
French Lace Competition (1907): the “Lace” section, the work of which he directed, won three distinctions: first prize (1000 Francs), second prize in collaboration, and for his personal work, the prize of the Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts.
Franco-British Exhibition in London (1908): gold medal for a braid of fuchsias signed by Chaleyé.
Brussels World's Fair (1910): a grand prize was won by three laces signed by Chaleyé (landscape with grisaille effect, a cockfight in colour and a cushion with chestnut decorations with spider webs). Chaleyé also won a gold medal for his collaboration.
International Exhibition in Turin (1911): he had produced new drawings which had earned him a gold medal for his collaboration.
International Exhibition of Lyon (1914): he was awarded a medal for his collaboration. Participation in the “Lace” and “Cabinetmaking” sections, of which Chaleyé directed the work and designed the models for this exhibition.

Alongside his artistic involvement in lacemaking, he exhibited his paintings at the Salon des artistes français from 1902. At the Salon des indépendants, one of his works was selected by the Commission des beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris and several museums have acquired his paintings: the cities of Le Puy, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, Saint-Gall (Switzerland). Housewives Choice, A-Z a cute Folk Art Alphabet of kitchen utensils and cooking implements rendered in a whimsical naive style. CHRISTINE McARTHUR was born in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, in 1953 and studied at Glasgow School of Art between 1971 and 1976. She taught and produced book illustrations before turning to paint full time. she was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute and in 1995 a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. McArthur has been the recipient of a number of awards including The Scottish Arts Council Award and the Glasgow Society of Women Artist Trust Fund Award. She has exhibited widely in the UK, particularly in London and Scotland, as well as in Russia, Hong Kong, Her early work was primarily in oil and she became well known for her large scale still life paintings on canvas. In the late 1980s she began to work in oil pastel and watercolour but more recently she has reverted to oil, as well as acrylic and collage.
She has exhibited widely with solo exhibitions in the Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow, Lemon Street Gallery, Truro, and Ainscough Gallery, London, among others.

Christine McArthur was awarded Scottish Education Department travelling scholarships in 1975 and 1976 and was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1990. In 1995 she was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. In 1997 John Lewis commissioned four large murals – each 6ft x 15ft - for the Glasgow store in 1999. In 2002 she received a commission from John Lewis for murals for the extension to their Peter Jones store, Sloane Square, London.

Clarence Skip Measelle has been featured in over 100 gallery and museum exhibitions, competitions, group shows, and solo shows throughout the US. He is best known for his work in photorealism and abstract illusionism.
The name Photorealism (also known as Hyperrealism or Superrealism) was coined in reference to those artists whose work depended heavily on photographs, which they often projected onto canvas allowing images to be replicated with precision and accuracy. The exactness was often aided further by the use of an airbrush, which was originally designed to retouch photographs. The movement came about within the same period and context as Conceptual art, Pop art, and Minimalism and expressed a strong interest in realism in art, over that of idealism and abstraction.
The first Photo realists were Chuck Close, Don Eddy, Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Robert Bechtle, Audrey Flack, Denis Peterson, Lowel Nesbitt and Malcolm Morley. Each began practicing some form of Photorealism around the same time, often utilizing different modes of application and techniques, and citing different inspirations for their work. However, for the most part they all worked independent from one another. For example, Chuck Close came of age at the height of Pop art and Andy Warhol's Factory, and was based out of SoHo in lower Manhattan. And Audrey Flack, a graduate of Yale, began creating photo-based works in the early 1960s.
