About the Item
Wonderful post impressionistic still life of autumn yellow chrysanthemums with boughs of bronze maple leaves in a vase. Painted in style of Albert Andre (French, 1869 - 1954). Circa 1950. Signed lower right corner "Laura Blond." Condition: good; one tear lower right corner professionally repaired; new non-yellowing UV resistant varnish applied. Presented in new, wood gilt-toned frame. Image size: 20"H x 24"W.
Albert Andre, a renowned Post-Impressionist, was born in Lyon on May 24, 1869. In 1889 Andre traveled to Paris and joined the Julian Academy where he studied under William Bouguereau. He exhibited for the first time in 1894 at the Salon des Independants where Auguste Renoir saw his work and befriended him. Renoir introduced Andre to Durand-Ruel who was successful in selling Andre's work primarily abroad to American collectors. From this positive debut, Andre continued to participate in the avant-garde exhibits, most especially the Salon d'Automne from 1904 to 1944. The works of Albert André are represented in many important museums, including the Modern Art Museum of New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the museums in Philadelphia and Washington DC, and the Musee D'Orsay in Paris.

This modern floral bouquet still-life, painted by Pasto in 1973, harkens back to Van Gogh's world famous turn-of-the-century depiction of the same subject. Bright still life by Louise L. Apthorp (American, 1878-1963). A wine bottle, vase full of brushes, pear, and large book sit on a table. The book is "Verve. The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature (1937-1960)". The tablecloth is bright, with a multicolor checker pattern, affixed to the wall to create a backdrop. The squares of color and folds in the cloth create the impression of cubism, even though the subject is not cubist.
