About the Item
A lumen print is typically made by bringing black-and-white photo paper out of the darkroom - and into the sun, and using that to expose one's materials. These are cameraless photographs (photograms), which are made by place materials on top of my photographic paper and exposing it to some type of UV light, ideally the sun or via a light box. (I did something a bit more experimental...)
The colors you see in this silver gelatin print are the result of my mixed processes and the brand of paper I used. Different papers turn the paper different colors, my first 3 lumens (including this one) were printed on old Agfa paper, which initially starts turning lavender. The colors change pretty dramatically from exposing time until after the prints are washed and fully dry (I included a couple process photos to show you the progression, the pink one is this print, upside down, before it was washed); I also use chemistry (and my hands) to help that along and bring a little more contrast into the prints. Which is why this one-of-a-kind print is actually a. LUMEN-CHEMIGRAM and not simply a lumen print.
I began experimenting with messy lumens on April 2nd (2024), as a way to offer alternative versions of my photograms and art as therapy classes to organizations who don't have darkrooms and private/Zoom students who don't want to diy their set-ups, but have also been meaning to play around with lumens a bit more for awhile now. At any rate, inspiration took over immediately.
These are cameraless photographs - and this new series, "Impermanence" (born April 2, 2024) is basically a sister series to Winds of Change (which inspired Equivalence, my upcoming book with Veritas Editions) was inspired while I was exposing this handmade photograph.
To expand on that, all of my photographs are essentially spiritual landscape photographs, or equivalent images. Further, this lumen (and many of my new, not available here, Winds of Change photograms) are UNIQUE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHS, made with materials I literally collected from Windansea Beach in La Jolla, CA, when I was in town, teaching a brief class nearby, and shipped to myself. This photogram was made with beach sand, in some cases Pacific Ocean water (wish I collected more, am running low), seaweed, palm leaves, and more.
My lumens are exposed for long periods of time - WITH a led panel that I was actually testing out for this process, since I didn't have time to expose in sunlight or don't have a proper UV light box.
