This minimalist landscape photograph is meticulously composed with a central form of a black circle, surrounded by white and a halo of verdant green. Light lines seem as if they are drawn into the surface of the sandy beige, grey field. A meditative work, the stark landscape is textured with rusty brown, green and golden tones, with a faint central bisecting line. Wetherall has balanced geometry with natural elements in the environment in this impressive photograph.
Zoe Wetherall is a Brooklyn-based photographer from Australia, who travels the world to photograph abstract aerial landscapes from the point of view of a hot air balloon. Zoe Wetherall photographs at a pace and elevation that gives a truly unique perspective. Hovering about the landscape in a hot air balloon these photographs have abstract the landscape by removing the line of the horizon.
Zoe Wetherall’s photos are taken just above us, a bird’s eye view. From a few hundred feet Wetherall photographs straight downward, excluding the horizon, sky, or any visual reference point.
Her photos tell stories and inspire questions: in “Horses” two horses stand next to a wire fence, the shadows of the fence posts and horses delineate their forms on the ground–tell us what they are–in an otherwise dry brown field of texture. In another photograph a wavy line of bushes separates finely mowed grass from a dense blue water, carefully manicured, and refined–but what is it? She records the structured geometry of natural and man-made forms and uses her camera to reveal the beauty in the subtle patterns hidden in architecture and landscape.
