Aaron Siskind
Pleasures and Terrors of Levitation

Circa 1950's

About the Item

Aaron Siskind did an iconic and distinctive series of divers photographed at Chicagos Oak Street Beach in the mid 1950's. This series captured everyone's attention for its dynamic capturing of man mid-space that has connotations of both man's ability to be acrobatic but also as being vulnerable when within space. He called the series the Pleasures and Terrors of Levitation and today it still captures our interest! Measures within matting: 9.5 x 7 inches - bigger behind matting. This is a photogravure and it was printed to go in a publication that represented images by various photographers - all of whom submitted what they wanted to go into the publication. So Siskind sent this image and photogravure was a way to print his image in high quality. Photogravure is another way for photogravures and fine art edition publishers to print. So it is a vintage print -and beneath the matting it probably still retain its spiral bound edging from being in the spiral bound publication. It is a great way to have the image at an affordable price, with a vintage feel to the print. It goes well anywhere but is great for summer houses, bedrooms, family rooms. It is not signed as it is a photogravure that was printed for its photography annual publication. Great to collect these and hang them! Provenance: Came in the vintage publication Sheet 9.5 x 7 inches (sight)
