Gorbals Boys (1948) - Silver Gelatin Fibre Print
Located in London, GB
Gorbals Boys (1948) - Silver Gelatin Fibre Print (Photo by Bert Hardy/Getty Images Archive London) Possibly Bert Hardy's most famous image. Two boys in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The Gorbals tenements were built quickly and cheaply in the 1840s, providing housing for Glasgow's burgeoning population of industrial workers. Conditions were appalling; overcrowding was standard and sewage and water facilities inadequate. The tenements housed about 40,000 people with up to eight family members sharing a single room, 30 residents sharing a toilet and 40 sharing a tap. By the time this photograph was taken 850 tenements had been demolished since 1920. Redevelopment of the area began in the late 1950s and the tenements were replaced with a modern tower block complex in the sixties. Original Publication: Picture Post - 4499 - The Forgotten Gorbals - pub. 1948 Additional Information: Unframed Paper Size: 20 x 16'' inches / 51 x 41 cm Printed 2024 Silver Gelatin Fibre Print Limited edition issued and stamped on front by the Getty Archive London Edition size 300 only NOTE OTHER SIZES OF THIS IMAGE AVAILABLE 10 x 8'' 10 x 12'' 12 x 16'' 16 x 20'' 20 x 24'' FRAMING AVAILABLE ON REQUEST Bert Hardy Albert William Thomas Hardy (19 May 1913 – 3 July 1995) was an English documentary and press photographer known for his work published in the Picture Post magazine between 1941 and 1957. The eldest of seven children, he left school at age 14 to work for a chemist who also processed photos. His first big sale came in 1936 when he photographed King George V and Queen Mary in a passing carriage during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, and sold 200 small prints of his best view of the King. His first assignment, at age 23, was to photograph Hungarian actor Sakall at the Mayfair Hotel. Hardy freelanced for The Bicycle magazine, and bought his first small-format 35 mm Leica. He signed on with the General Photographic Agency as a Leica photographer, later founding his own freelance firm, Criterion. General Photographic Agency General Photographic Agency a Fleet Street, London agency, sold photos at least between 1880-1950. Picture Post and World War II In 1941, Hardy was recruited by the then editor Tom Hopkinson of the leading picture publication of the 1930s to the 1950s, Picture Post. Founded in 1938 and funded by publisher Edward Hulton, the magazine's first editor was Hungarian émigré Stefan Lorant (1901–97) assisted by Hopkinson, who took over as editor from 1940. Pete Townshend of the Who Madison Square Garden New York 1979 Large Oversize limited Estate edition (ed size 15 only this size) silver gelatin print. numbered and signed by the Estate on reverse stamped with blond embossed Archive stamp on front paper size 40x30" inches / 101 x 76 cm Certificate of authenticity supplied. unframed Framing available on request Ships securely from London England OTHER SIZES AVAILABLE pls enquire About Michael Putland the photographer : Born in 1947, Michael grew up in Harrow where he took his first pictures at the age of nine before leaving school at sixteen to work as an assistant to various photographers including Time-Life photographer, Walter Curtain and the legendary motor racing photographer, Louis Klemantaski. In 1969 he set up his own studio and by 1971, he was the official photographer for the British music magazine Disc & Music Echo. His first assignment for them that year was to photograph Mick Jagger in London. From the editorial work for Disc and Music Echo, Sounds and later Smash Hits & Q magazine amongst others, to the 1973 tour with The Rolling Stones that led to a long-standing relationship working with the band, Michael has shot prodigiously including for major record labels including CBS, Warner, Elektra, Polydor, Columbia Records and EMI. Relocating to New York in 1977, it was here that Michael founded the photo agency, Retna. It has been said that Michael photographed everyone from Abba to Zappa … when looking at his archive this is actually true. Now living in East Sussex, recent 2016 exhibitions include “Off The Record” at The Lucy Bell Gallery in Hastings showing images both on and off stage including previously unseen contact sheets; whilst Ono Arte in Bologna, Italy is hosting a David Bowie show. Autumn 2014 saw Michael’s 50 year retrospective at the Getty Gallery in London: “A life in Music, 50 Years On The Road”. Snap Gallery in London’s Piccadilly Arcade regularly have a selection of Michael’s work on show. Michael continues to shoot the artists he most admires – likely to be jazz, classical and world musicians, who have always provided an alternative narrative to his rock music portfolio. “It has been a fantastic ride through an incredible period of music history, which combined my two great loves … music and photography. Little did I appreciate, when my Uncle Alan encouraged my photography back in the 1950s, that this would lead me to photographing nearly all of my heroes … and thrilled to be still finding new ones. A great never ending journey.” Michael Putland About The Who : Few rock & roll bands were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notorious live performances demonstrated: Keith Moon fell over his drum kit while Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey prowled the stage as bassist John...

Richard Harris – Malta, 1973 Limited Estate Print
Located in London, GB
Richard Harris – Malta, 1973 Born in 1930 in Limerick, Ireland, Harris made his screen debut in the 1958 film Alive and Kicking. This was followed by solid supporting roles in films such as Shake Hands with the Devil (1959), The Guns of Navarone (1961) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1962). But he jumped to the top of Hollywood’s list of leading men in 1963 following his performance as young coal miner turned professional rugby player in This Sporting Life which earned him an Oscar nomination. Once a notorious drinker and hell-raiser to rival Oliver Reed, his work during the Seventies and Eighties isn’t widely revered, but in 1990 he once again earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in The Field. Limited Edition David Steen Estate Print Limited Edition: All prints are limited editions, no further prints are produced once sold Paper size - 34 x 24 " / 86 x 61 cm Limited to 30 only this size All prints are bespoke and printed to order stamped and numbered by the Estate Copyright: © David Steen / The David Steen Archive David Steen’s introduction to photography was as a 15-year-old school leaver joining Picture Post where he had the good luck to be taken under the wing of the legendary Bert Hardy as an assistant. It was the ultimate training ground in photojournalism, and the launch pad for his career. David’s reunion with Picture Post after doing his National Service (as special photographer based in Eygpt, covering the major trouble zones) was short-lived. The magazine was losing ground and closed. He moved to Fleet Street, first to a bright new Mirror title, Woman’s Sunday Mirror, where incidentally he picked up First Prize in Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Best Pictures of the Year Award for his sequence of ‘Birth of a Baby’, the progress of a young woman delivering her own baby under hypnosis. He was 21, the youngest ever to be awarded this prize. There followed time as a staff photographer with The Daily Mail; Fleet Street was the hub of the world. Then on to freelancing…Queen magazine, Nova, the Sunday Times Magazine, international magazines around the world, over the years covering projects as diverse as riots in Harlem to a film set in Acapulco, a battered wives’ refuge to the Queen and family at Sandringham: the hopeless, the homeless, the glitterati. Trained on the maxim ‘every picture tells a story’ he has focused on film stars, actors, criminals, politicians, prime ministers and countless men, women and children going about their everyday lives. David Steen believes himself to be lucky. He thinks lucky; luck is being in the right place at the right time, having the luck to have a loving family and enduring friends and winning a three-year battle against cancer. Asked by aspiring photographers for his best advice, his stock reply is: ‘Get up early.’ David Steen † 1936 – 2015 Tags: richard harris, actor, movies, hollywood, film, writer, irish, 1970s, 70s, film director, this sporting life, king arthur, camelot, a man called horse, unforgiven, gladiator, harry potter and the chamber of secrets, harry potter and the sorcerer’s stone
