Mitchell Funk
Intoxicated Skid Row Bowery Homeless, Gritty Street Photography

1969

About the Item

Enter the Wood Chipper. Before the Bowery was a trendy destination, it was America's most famous Skid Row. Vagrant flophouses, 10-dollar prostitutes, dive bars, and what used to be referred to as "drunk bums" lined the streets. Taken in 1969, Street Photographer Mitchell Funk makes a statement by photographing only a part of a fallen soul as if only a half a person was left. One shoe is off, revealing a soiled black sock. The omnipresent brown paper bag that defined all drunks of that period and was their only worldly possession lies next to his leg. It reveals the faint outline of a cheap pint of booze. What's most notable is the subject's overall pose. He seems to have collapsed. Facedown, he lies like a giant hardwood razed and ready to be disposed of. Signed, dated and numbered 2/15 lower right, , Printed later, other size available, unframed - Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum. He has had more than 50 Photography Magazine Covers and has had covers on Newsweek and Life Magazine among others
