Conceptual Figurative Photography

CONCEPTUAL STYLE

In 1967, artist Sol LeWitt wrote that in “Conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.” He was giving a name to an art movement that had emerged in the 1960s in which artists were less focused on their medium being something traditionally “artistic” and instead engaged in using any object, movement, form, action or place to express an idea.

LeWitt’s work was featured alongside an assemblage of notes, drawings and outlines by other artists in “Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art,” a groundbreaking show at New York City’s School of Visual Arts curated by Mel Bochner, another leading exponent of Conceptualism. Building on radical 20th-century statements, like Fountain (1917) by French artist Marcel Duchamp, Conceptual artists around Europe and North and South America were not interested in the commercial art scene and rather directly challenged its systems and values.

Stretching into the 1970s, this movement has also been called Post-Object art and Dematerialized art. Conceptual art reflected a larger era of social and political upheaval. Pieces associated with the style range from Roelof Louw’s Soul City (Pyramid of Oranges) (1967) — a work of installation art that sees fresh oranges stacked into a pyramid from which visitors are allowed to take one orange away — to On Kawara’s “Today” series, which saw the Japanese artist carefully painting a date in white acrylic on canvases consisting of a single color from 1966 to his death in 2014. Artists such as Ed Ruscha, who created the Twentysix Gasoline Stations book — a collection of photos of gas stations that is widely said to be the first modern artists’ book — made photography a major platform for Conceptual art, as did Bruce Nauman, who burned one of Ruscha's books and then photographed it for his own.

Conceptual art’s legacy of questioning artistic authorship, ownership and how to work with complex ideas of space and time had a significant influence on the decades of culture that followed, and it continues to inform art today.

The collection of Conceptual photography, paintings and sculptures on 1stDibs includes artworks by John Baldessari, Jenny Holzer, Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth and others.

Russian Samizdat Art Conceptual Compass Sculpture Assemblage Gerlovin, Gerlovina
Located in Surfside, FL
Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin Compass, 1988 Aluminum sculpture, mixed media and c-print photograph construction, c-print, felt tip marker 12.5 h × 12.5w × 4 d in (30 × 30 × 6 cm) Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin were founding members of the underground conceptual movement Samizdat in the Soviet Union, described in their book Russian Samizdat Art. Based on a play of paradoxes, their work is rich with philosophic and mythological implications, reflected in their writing as well. Their book Concepts was published in Russia in 2012. The work by Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin is emphatically contemporary. The artist couple were part of the Moscow Conceptualists, their performance Costumes, from 1977, deepened their ongoing work with linguistic semiotic systems and their own bodies. Considering the context in which Gerlovina and Gerlovin made their work—that of political restrictions on public life, of unfreedom, and censorship—their collaborative togetherness must also be read as a space of possibility for political community and resistance. Rimma Gerlovina’s hair is featured prominently in the art of the Gerlovins as a constructing element of the body. Used for the linear drawings her braids transmit transpersonal waves reminiscent of an aura of live filaments. Long loose hairs function as threads of life; streaming in abundance, they allude to Aphrodisiac vitality and Samsonian strength. On the other hand, they are the haircloth worn during mourning and penitence. In New York they continued to make sculptural objects, and their photographic projects grew into an extended series called Photoglyphs. In their photographs, they use their own faces to explore the nature of thought and what lies beyond it. Since coming to the United States in 1980, they had many exhibitions in galleries and museums including the Art Institute of Chicago. The New Orleans Museum of Art launched a retrospective of their photography, which traveled to fifteen cities. Group exhibitions include the Venice Biennale, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, Washington D.C., Bonn Kunsthalle, Germany, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, and others. Samizdat or “self-published” began in the Soviet Union, and Samizdat art consists mainly of books and magazines published and distributed by the artists who made them. Samizdat art has sources in the innovative books and magazines turned out by the early 20th century Russian avant-garde—artists and writers like Olga Rozanova, Vladimir Mayakovsky, El Lissitzky, and Alexander Rodchenko. Vintage Ektacolor Color Photograph Memory Berlin Germany Photo Shimon Attie
Located in Surfside, FL
Shimon Attie (b. 1957) Joachimstrasse, Ecke, Auguststrasse, Berlin, 1994 Edition 3/3 Dye coupler print on Kodak Ektacolor paper 27 x 34 inches (68.6 x 86.4 cm) (image) 34 x 40 inches (sheet) Presents well. Framed Dimensions 36.25 X 42.5 From series The Writing on the Wall. Attie projected found pre-war images of Jewish street-life in Berlin onto the same or nearby addresses in 1992/1993. Through this intervention, fragments of the past were introduced into the visual field of the present; long destroyed Jewish community life were visually simulated, momentarily recreated. The Writing on the Wall project was realized in Berlin’s former Jewish quarter, the Scheunenviertel, located in the Eastern part of the city, close to the Alexanderplatz. At the heart of Berlin, the Scheunenviertel was a center for eastern European Jewish immigrants from the turn of the century. The few historical photographs which remained after the Holocaust reflect the world of the Jewish working class rather than that of the more affluent and assimilated German Jews who lived mostly in the western part of the city. The juxtaposition between the projected images and the empty rooms reminds viewers of the fragility of memory, and how sites are activated/changed by presence and absence. Shimon Attie (born Los Angeles in 1957) is an American visual artist. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008, The Rome Prize in 2001 and a Visual Artist Fellowship from Harvard University's Radcliffe Institute for Advance Study in 2007. His work spans a variety of media, including photography, site-specific installation, multiple channel immersive video installation, performance, and new media. Much of Attie's practice explores how a wide range of contemporary media may be used to re-imagine new relationships between space, time, place, and identity. Much, though not all, of Attie's work in the 90s dealt with the history of the second world war. He first garnered significant international attention by slide projecting images of past Jewish life onto contemporary locations in Berlin. More recent projects have involved using a range of media to engage local communities to find new ways of representing their history, memory and potential futures. Attie's artworks and interventions are site-specific and immersive in nature, and tend to engage subject matter that is both social, political and psychological. In 2013, Five monographs have been published on Attie's work, which has also been the subject of a number of films, which have aired on PBS, BBC, and ARD. Since receiving his MFA Degree in 1991, Attie has realized approximately 25 major projects in ten countries around the world. Most recently, in 2013-14, Shimon Attie was awarded the Lee Krasner Lifetime Achievement Award in Art. Judaica subject matter. He was born in 1957 and received an MFA in 1991. In 1991 he moved to Germany from his previous home in Northern California, and began to make work initially about Jewish identity and the history of the second world war. His work later evolved to engage broader issues of memory, place and identity more generally. Shimon Attie moved to New York City in 1997. Shimon Attie's work has been extensively reviewed by a wide variety of publications, including features and/or reviews in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Art in America, Art News, Art Forum, The Village Voice, The Boston Globe, and many others. Yasaman Alipour, writing in "The Brooklyn Rail: Critical Perspectives on Arts, Politics, and Culture", on Shimon Attie's solo exhibition "Facts on the Ground" at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City: Attie achieves something profound: he presents a unique opportunity to contemplate Israel/Palestine without the distraction that is simultaneously a manifestation of the limitations of visual of written language and the possibilities of their alliance." Shimon Attie (American, b. 1957), Untitled Memory (Projection of Marsha A.) Ektacolor photograph, 1998, from the Untitled Memory series, Gallery label to verso, Jack Shainman Gallery, New York matted and framed. Frame dimensions 27 3/4 x 32 1/4 in, photo 25 X 31 Provenance: from the Estate of the late Ron and Anne Dees, Fayetteville, North Carolina Ron and Anne Dees were longtime collectors, lovers, and patrons of art. Starting in the late 1990s, they began their art acquisition and collection, focusing substantially on contemporary art. Their affinity for art went far beyond simply collecting and displaying. Ron served as a docent at the esteemed Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from the late 1990s into the 2000s. In the series "Untitled Memory," Attie revisited his former (and then-deserted) apartment in San Francisco, projecting black-and-white snapshots of his friends and family in spaces that they previously occupied. The desaturated figures have a specter-like appearance and are often depicted in repose or rest, as if in a perpetual state of waiting. The juxtaposition between the projected images and the empty rooms reminds viewers of the fragility of memory, and how sites are activated/changed by presence and absence. The Long Room, Trinity College Library, Dublin Ireland
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Discover the captivating beauty of Reinhard Görner's photography with The Long Room, an awe-inspiring vista into the Old Library at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. This iconic photograph is not only visually stunning, but also evokes a contemplative stillness, inviting viewers to ponder the intersecting realms of art, architecture, and knowledge. Embodying the peaceful grandeur of one of the world's most beautiful libraries, The Long Room stands as a tribute to the rich interplay between aesthetic beauty and the human thirst for knowledge, as well as the exciting contrast between emotional and intellectual resonance. Visual description: This revered hall is one of the most magnificent library spaces in the world, renowned for its dramatic barrel-vaulted ceiling and the historical aura that permeates its walls. Lined with tall, dark wooden shelves brimming with ancient tomes, the room is a treasure trove of knowledge, housing 200,000 of the Library's oldest books. A symphony of wood, the polished oak bookcases adorned with gilded lettering stand as sentinels of history, each carrying the weight of centuries of scholarly work. Above, the vaulted ceiling soars, crafted from oak and imbued with the warm, golden light that streams in, casting a serene ambiance throughout the room. The central aisle runs the impressive length of the room, flanked by white marble busts of philosophers, writers, and great minds who have shaped the intellectual landscape of the Western world, adding a sense of gravitas and continuity to the space. This library is not just a haven for books but also a grandiose example of classical architecture, with the rhythm of the arches and columns providing a structural cadence that resonates with the tranquility and dignity of an institution dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. The Long Room's harmonious proportions and the sense of infinite possibility evoked by the seemingly endless rows of books are a captivating homage to the world of academia. It's a space that feels both timeless and filled with the presence of the countless readers and scholars who have passed through its domain over the centuries. This image captures the essence of a truly iconic space within the realm of global cultural heritage. 60 x 75 inches ed. of 7 $9,000 70 x 87.5 inches ed. of 5 $11,000 signed and numbered on label, verso Reinhard Görner, with his large format photographs orchestrates the monumentality of rooms. An active architecture photographer since 1985, is a master of perspectives and precise spatial compositions, and he thus considers classical sculpture, in all of its possible facets, a special challenge. "Görner’s photographs sometimes open the doors to another world and take the viewer with them on a journey through time. Here the palace is no longer a museum but both royal residence and a site steeped in history. The viewer does not have to share the halls with the masses of visitors; instead the images offer him exclusive impressions of the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) and the Galerie des Batailles (Hall of Battles) as even the king of France was probably never granted. The halls are empty of people, yet they seem to be able to unfurl their individual characters of their own accord. These places practically breathe history, and this aspect is also part of the essence captured in the photographs. King Wilhelm of Prussia was named German Emperor Wilhelm I in the Hall of Mirrors after France was defeated in 1870–1871 in the Franco-German War. The Treaty of Versailles following World War I was also signed there in 1919. In this sense, the architectural photographs of Versailles...

Flamingo Pops
Located in London, GB
'Flamingo Pops' is part of an ongoing series, inspired by 17th Century Dutch Master Painters. Mieke experiments with modern techniques to create 21st Century still life in digital images. Her work moves between fact and fiction and constantly challenges the boundaries of photography and art. This image always brings award winning photographer Mieke to smile. The sleeping Flamingos look like colourful little sweets or ice creams. Other sizes are available on request. Flamingo Pops was selected as part of the 2021 Campari campaign #artwithoutwalls which featured selected artworks across London. This limited edition print is available in size A0 as well as smaller size of A2 and has 200 in the edition run. Framing image is only for visualisation purposes. Print will come unframed with signed certificate of authenticity. ABOUT MIEKE DOUGLAS Mieke Douglas is an award winning Canadian/Dutch Fine Art Photographer who currently lives and works in London. Mieke is a self-taught photographer whose work questions relationships between people and nature by challenging issues of distance and intimacy. Mieke draws influence from Abstract Impressionists, the abandonment of the traditional and combines this with the the17th century Dutch Master Painters’ use of light, composition and colour to direct the eye of the viewer. Her images offer a personal interpretation of intrinsic form, rather than narrative content or direct pictorial representation of a subject. Mieke’s work strips down the unnecessary and focuses on simple lines and moments of stillness. Mieke’s images are held in private collections and have been exhibited internationally in Paris, Rome, Rotterdam, Barcelona and London, including at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2019. She has won numerous awards, most recently: a Julia...

King Wilhelm of Prussia was named German Emperor Wilhelm...

Shining Wall of Books Beinecke Library, New Haven
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Reinhard Görner captures the monumentality of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale's principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. 3 sizes, below. The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library is the rare book library and literary archive of the Yale University Library in New Haven, Connecticut. Situated on Yale University's Hewitt Quadrangle, the building was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 1963. The building has been called a "jewel box", and also a "laboratory for the humanities". The Modernist structure contains furniture designed by Florence Knoll and Marcel Breuer. It is one of the largest buildings in the world entirely dedicated to rare books and manuscripts. An elevated public exhibition mezzanine surrounds the glass stack tower, and displays among other things, one of the 48 extant copies of the Gutenberg Bible. Two basement floors extend under much of Hewitt Quadrangle. The first sub-grade level, the "Court" level, centers on a sunken courtyard in front of the Beinecke, which features The Garden (Pyramid, Sun, and Cube). These are abstract allegorical sculptures by Isamu Noguchi that are said to represent time (the pyramid), sun (the disc), and chance (the cube). German large-scale photographer Reinhard Görner is known for his stunning, monumental-scale photography, which combine a sense of grandness with intimacy. He was born in 1950 in Leipzig, Germany, and he lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He studied drama, german literature and sinology in Munich and Berlin, and has been photographing architecture, interiors, and public spaces since 1981. Condition: New. Images are crisp and sharp. Image and details are not shown at full resolution for the protection of the artist. Reinhard Görner Shining Wall of Books...
