Photography and acting are kindred spirits in the ongoing series by E2 - Kleinveld & Julien, entitled In Empathy We Trust. The project presents viewers with re-imagined iconic images from the history of art. The collaborators re-envision the work of old master painters beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years.
With subjects enacting roles with varied representations of race, age, and sexual orientation, E2’s revisionist Art History works by artists such as van Eyck, Botticelli, Raphael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, Manet and Whistler. Inspired by the original paintings, E2 hopes to “jar viewers” into questioning their own perceptions. They invite viewers to see these images, and indeed the world anew, using humor, wit and playfulness. In addition, they hope that the viewers will see how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination.
The collaboration began in 2010, after completing work on the traveling exhibition and book project, Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. This natural and man-made disaster brought social inequities in Louisiana into vivid focus. Conversations between Kleinveld and Julien revealed their mutual interest in issues of social justice.
E2 has been exhibited internationally in institutions such as: Royal Academy of Art (London), Photoville (New York), Gemeentemuseum (The Hague), Palazzo Fortuny (Venice), Museum Castelvecchio (Verona), Galerie SIRIUS (Tokyo), New Orleans Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans). The duo is represented by JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY, New Orleans and their work appears in numerous public and private collections, including: Benetton Collection (Treviso, Italy), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Trento, Italy), Hilliard University Art Museum (Lafayette, LA) and The Marks Collection (Houston).

Originally from Excelsior, Minnesota, Erik Madigan Heck (*1983) is one of the youngest and most promising American fashion photographers of the contemporary art scene. In his relatively short career the artist developed a personal way of looking at fashion, as Nathalie Herschdorfer underlines in her essay "Minimal and pure: Erik Madigan Heck fashion photographs". His work is characterized by a clear and distinctive treatment of colours and patterns, which makes it unequivocal.
"Heck’s photographs push the concept to new limits, creating imagery that goes beyond traditional fashion photography. Emma Summerton (*1970 Australia) graduated from the National Art School in Sydney, where she studied fine arts majoring in Photography. Summerton moved to London in 1998, where she worked as an assistant to artist Fiona Banner while starting her career as a photographer. Her breakthrough as a professional photographer came with the collaboration with Terry de Havilland in 2004/2005, from which her first solo exhibition, titled Landed at the Christophe Guye Galerie shows from August 29 to November 23 2019 a large selection of the most important works. Since then Summerton has established herself as one of the most talented photographers to emerge in the mid 2000's. Her in-depth technical knowledge coupled with her eye for detail and love for fashion have made her images not only unique but very distinctive, setting her apart from other photographers working in the industry today.
Summerton's work revolves around the themes of fashion, love, desire and intimacy. Her Polaroid works are part of a project Summerton started in 1999 as a series of Self Portraits, firstly as visual love letters to her then partner and also in an attempt to re-find her voice with photography. ‘My mother was a dressmaker, and in school, she would make me dresses to wear to dances based on drawings I made,’ she says. Back then, costumes were an access point to unleash Summerton’s imagination. In her ‘Polaroid experiments’, as she calls them, costumes again became a vehicle for her to express her inner life.
