About the Item

Jack Mitchell vintage mid-20th Century photograph of modern dancer Louis Falco in his classic work "Timewright". Copyright stamped and dated 1969 and personally signed by Jack Mitchell. Highly collectible original vintage silver gelatin print mounted by the photographer on display board. Special Holiday Price. Jack Mitchell (1925 - 2013) was an American photographer of artists, dancers, film and theater performers, musicians and writers. He is hailed as one of the most important dance photographers of the 20th century. His work appeared in major newspapers and on the cover of major magazines, including over 160 covers of Dance Magazine. The Smithsonian called him “the benchmark by which other dance photographers assessed their own work”. Mitchell photographed John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Leonard Bernstein, David Byrne, Truman Capote, Anthony Quinn, Jack Nicholson, Patti LuPone, Keith Haring, Neil Simon, Angela Lansbury, Twyla Tharp, Ned Rorem, Leontyne Price, Alfred Hitchcock, Spalding Gray, Ann Reinking, Andy Warhol, Natalie Wood, and Gloria Swanson. His work appeared in The New York Times, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Life, Newsweek, People, Rolling Stone, Time, Vanity Fair and Vogue, among others. Louis Falco (1942-1993) was a gifted American dancer, highly innovative choreographer and an ongoing subject of Mitchell photographs. Falco attended the High School of Performing Arts and began performing professionally with Charles Weidman and José Limón. He danced opposite Rudolf Nureyev in Limon's The Moor's Pavane on Broadway in 1974 and 1975. Falco made his debut as a choreographer in 1967, one of the first choreographers to experiment with rock bands and whimsical innovations on stage. The Louis Falco Dance Company was acclaimed throughout the 1970's, as was his choreography of the 1980 motion picture Fame. After the explosive success of the film, he began a career in commercial choreography including music videos for a number of MTV artists. The Falco Company's last performance in NYC was for the inauguration of the Joyce Theater in 1982. Falco died from AIDS in 1993.
