Combining the documentary style of my previous climate project, The Witness Tree, with my earlier narrative fictional approach, I photograph paper cutouts (from appropriated online images) of climate-threatened birds. I place the cutouts within the birds’ current habitats so that they look real, but upon inspection, reveal themselves to be photos within photos—the gaze within the gaze upon nature—as actual birds recede into marginal zones of survival.
The images are meant to disrupt the casual gaze, disarming the expectations of nature photography, leaving viewers disturbed and curious.
Divergence of Birds (2017-current)
A large-scale, long-term, multimedia conceptual project about the threat of species extinction on birds in North America .
My current climate project, Divergence of Birds, takes inspiration from two texts: The Audubon Society’s “Birds and Climate Change Report” which projects that, by 2080, climate change will affect the range of habitat of over half of North American birds; and Phillip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” where electric versions of once-commonplace animals are so realistic that they fool even veterinarians. Divergence of Birds addresses the prospect that, one day, only simulacra of climate-impacted animals will be left.

Grenadier Pond is in High Park in Toronto, which opened to the public in 1876. It spans 161 hectares (400 acres) and is the second-largest municipal park in Toronto. It is a great location for photographers and naturalists. This image was taken at around 6:30 a.m. at the park’s Grenadier Pond. A long exposure really enhances the reflection of the trees and brush at the pond’s shoreline.

In her new exhibition Churilla draws from her years spent as a swimmer, lifeguard, and athlete to capture the forgotten freedom and exuberance of days of youth spent on the water. In 1999, Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber transplanted themselves to New York City, bringing an urban feel to their photos. In the series, "Some Other Place" (2000-2002), neighborhood sidewalks, city parks, and forays into the wilderness were reconstructed, but with a darker sensibility than their earlier series. Nix and Gerber’s subdued color palette and increasingly complex compositions also reflect this change.
Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber have been making art collaboratively for over sixteen years. Originally from the American Midwest, now based in Brooklyn, they construct meticulously detailed model environments and photograph the results. This large-scale black and white landscape is part of artist Ron Tarver's long-term, ongoing project, " Land, Sea, Air," that explores the wide-ranging system of wetlands in the US National Wildlife Refuge. It depicts the wetlands of the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region. The refuge, located along the coast of Delaware, is mostly marsh, but also includes freshwater impoundments and upland habitats that are managed for other wildlife. Through his elegantly rendered naturalistic photos that verge on abstraction, Tarver investigates the delicate nature of the ecosystem, the government's precarious conservation policies, and our relationship to these unique spaces. This print is also in the collection of the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA. It ships rolled in a 36 "x 6" tube.
Ron Tarver is a professor of Studio Art specializing in Photography at Swarthmore College. He served as staff photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer for 32 years, and his work has appeared in National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker, and Black and White Magazine. He is co-author of the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, published by Harper Collins in 2004, which was accompanied by a traveling exhibition. Tarver shares a 2012 Pulitzer Prize at the Inquirer for his work on a series documenting school violence in the Philadelphia public school system, and was nominated for a second Pulitzer in 2013 for a series exploring dog...

Ben Cope + Rowan Daly Off the Grid
Off the Grid is the culmination of a six-year photographic journey through Baja, Mexico. Ben Cope and Rowan Daly began their travels in 2014, working their way through the towns of la Salinas, Baja Mar, and Cantamar, down through Ensanada and la Bufadora. This series of photographs depicts the pair’s adventures and explorations. Off the Grid documents the textures, people, and places visited during this incredible journey.
Ben Cope is a Los Angeles based portrait artist with a BFA in ceramic sculpture and photography from Columbus State University. He maintains a successful career with a diverse portfolio including fashion, editorial, celebrity portraiture and advertising. He is widely known for his celebrity and fashion portraiture, which has been published internationally in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, GQ, The Work Magazine, Fucking Young, and l’Officiel, and has shot international campaigns for such clients as Adidas, L’Oréal, Paul Mitchell, and Vidal Sassoon.
