About the Item
Climate Change can be beautiful. Wildfires from Canada created an orange smoke field that blanked New York City. For a photographer, air pollution was an aesthetic gift. Perched on an upper east side highrise roof, Mitchell Funk captured a unique and beautiful New York moment. With the skinny super-tall skyscrapers of Billionaires Row serving as a backdrop, Funk composes a joyful orange sun above the hazy city where the hard lines of architecture become soft. This image is part representational and part impressionist, akin to Monet's sunset over the Claude Monet, Claude Monet, Le Parlement, soleil couchant (1900-1903).
This image is signed, dated and numbered 2/15 lower right recto. Other sizes are available. The work is unframed and printed later. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
