Phillip Buehler
"Thunderbolt and Parachute Jump" a limited edition from Coney Island, 1997

1997

About the Item

18"x24" limited edition historic photograph, edition 1/5. This photograph depicts a roller coaster that was built in 1925, abandoned in 1980, and demolished in 2000. Behind is the Parachute Jump, an attraction that was originally at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and later moved to Steeplechase Park. It ceased operations in the 1960s and was eventually named an historic landmark and restored in the 2000s. Phillip Buehler is a New York based photographer who documents the deterioration and remnants of neglected architecture constructed in the recent past. In the series “No Man is an Island...” Buehler has photographed the historic, and also often forgotten islands, around New York City. Some of them, like Ellis Island, loom large in their impact on history, culture and existence in the national identity. Others, like “Rat Island,” a privately-owned 2.5 acre islet north of The Bronx, with an unusual statue of William Tell (and nothing much more), are known about by virtu- ally no one. Buehler received his BA at Rutgers University and his MFA in photography at School of Visual Arts. Phillip Buehler has been featured in Art in America, The New York Times, Art News, The Art Newspaper, Wall Street Journal, American Photo Magazine, The Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Gothamist, The Guardian, The Sun, ABC, CNN, and numerous other publications.

"Weeks 297" Sea Train, Subway Reef Photograph by Stephen Mallon 40"x60" unframed
By Stephen Mallon
Located in New York, NY
C-Print Photograph, edition 3 of 5 - 40"x60" signed and editioned on reverse by the artist. Presented unframed. This photograph documents the creation of artificial reefs along the Atlantic Coast. Stacks of New York City subway cars sit atop a barge at sea. The blue-grey water, shows a white wave cresting in foreground with the lines of subway train cars stacked on top of each other center of the composition. This unusual recycling program created artificial reefs along United States East Coast utilizing the decommissioned NYC subway cars. From 2001 to 2010, the MTA, which runs the city’s subways, re-purposed thousands of decommissioned subway cars by submerging them into the ocean off eastern seaboard states such as New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and South Carolina. There, the urban relics become artificial reefs, providing safe habitats for marine life. Photographer Stephen Mallon spent two years documenting the project, and his images are now on view at the New York Transit Museum‘s Grand Central Terminal Annex in a new exhibition. In a bold move, the NYC Transit...
