About the Item

Jack Mitchell vintage mid-20th Century nude photograph of gay porn star Calvin Culver (porn name Casey Donovan) best know for his lead role in the break through film "Boys in the Sands". Photo taken in 1972 during a shoot for the entertainment publication After Dark Magazine. Highly collectible original vintage gelatin silver print, stamped on back by the photographer "Copyright 1972 JACK MITCHELL 356 East 74, New York City". Special Holiday Price. Jack Mitchell (1925 - 2013) was an American photographer of artists, dancers, film and theater performers, musicians and writers. He is hailed as one of the most important dance photographers of the 20th century. His work appeared in major newspapers and on the cover of major magazines, including over 160 covers of Dance Magazine. The Smithsonian called him “the benchmark by which other dance photographers assessed their own work”. Mitchell photographed John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Leonard Bernstein, David Byrne, Truman Capote, Anthony Quinn, Jack Nicholson, Patti LuPone, Keith Haring, Neil Simon, Angela Lansbury, Twyla Tharp, Ned Rorem, Leontyne Price, Alfred Hitchcock, Spalding Gray, Ann Reinking, Andy Warhol, Natalie Wood, and Gloria Swanson. His work appeared in The New York Times, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Life, Newsweek, People, Rolling Stone, Time, Vanity Fair and Vogue, among others. Calvin Culver, better known by his adult film name Casey Donovan, was born November 2, 1943 in East Bloomfield, New York. He graduated from teachers' college in 1965 and worked as a teacher in Peekskill and New York City. When he was fired from his teaching job after an altercation with a student, he began working as an escort and tried to establish an acting career. Culver began a modeling career and appeared in off-Broadway and Broadway productions. He was a sincere, friendly and charming man. He began his adult film career in 1971 in the film Ginger. He next appeared in Casey, playing the title role. From that film and the singer Donovan Culver created his screen name. Also in 1971 Culver appeared in the film that would make him famous, Boys in the Sand (1971). The first adult film to achieve mainstream crossover success, Boys led to talk of Culver's moving into "legitimate" film work. It also allowed Culver to build a lucrative career as a high-priced escort, although his growing fame in the adult film world cost him his modeling career as more and more potential employers connected him to "Casey Donovan". Culver appeared in the Broadway revival of Captain Brassbound's Conversion with Ingrid Bergman in 1972 and the 1973 Lincoln Center production of The Merchant of Venice. He toured nationally in the play Tubstrip and in 1984 produced and appeared in an unsuccessful revival of the play The Ritz. In 1973 Culver began a relationship with the actor Tom Tryon. They were together until 1977. In 1978 Culver bought a guest house in Florida but the business failed. In 1982 he began writing an advice column, "Ask Casey", for "Stallion," a gay male magazine featuring nude pictorials. Culver's health began to deteriorate in 1985, and he died of an AIDS-related illness on August 10, 1987 in Inverness, Florida.

George Platt Lynes (1907–1955), was a gregarious American portrait, dance, fashion, and male nude photographer whose career spanned the late 1920s through the early 1950s. From age eighteen, Lynes entered the cosmopolitan world of the American expatriate community in Paris when he became acquainted with the salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He began photographing authors like Stein, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, and Colette and soon established himself as one of the premier fashion photographers in the Condé Nast stable, documenting the ballet companies of George Balanchine/Lincoln Kirstein, and pursuing a private obsession with seductive images of young male nudes rarely published in his lifetime. Orpheus represents a major 20th Century artistic collaboration between composer Igor Stravinsky, choreographer George Ballanchine, and artist/designer Isamu Naguchi. Orpheus is a thirty-minute neoclassical ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky in collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine in Hollywood, California in 1947. The work was commissioned by Ballet Society, later renamed New York City Ballet, which Balanchine founded with Lincoln Kirstein. Sets and costumes were created by Isamu Noguchi. Noguchi’s lyre harp from the production became the symbol of the New York City Ballet. Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel...
