Alex Sher is an award-winning American underwater fine art photographer whose admiration of feminine sensuality heralded him to worldwide acclaim.
Sher was born in Ukraine in 1962 and started taking photographs at the age of twelve. He graduated from Kyiv University in 1984. Two years later, he volunteered as medical personnel to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster recovery. When asked about that time, he says "having no clue how much radiation you are getting makes you appreciate every breath - pretty much what you feel underwater."
Alex Sher started showing his photographs in the early nineties; however, he considered himself an amateur artist until his work was stolen from an exhibition in Kyiv.
Sher immigrated to the US with his family in 1995 and currently resides in Los Angeles. As a former biologist and an ocean diver, Alex is deeply concerned with the decimation of kelp forests along the California Pacific...

Beginning in 1937, and over the course of nearly two decades, the trio collectively staged photographs set against the backdrops of Fire Island, Provincetown, and Nantucket, among other locations. Their psychologically and sexually charged images often served as studies for the artists' subsequent paintings and works on paper. Have you heard about German photographer Stefanie Schneider yet? Her artworks have been featured as cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cyndi Lauper and also have appeared in the feature movie 'Stay' starring Ryan Gosling. She is now back on the silver screen for the film 'Instant Dreams', a Dutch documentary about the history of Polaroids.
Stefanie, your photography is truly unique. How did you come to Polaroid and instant film photography as a means of expression for your art?
When I started showing my work in galleries, photography was analog. I first shot Polaroid film in 1993 when it was essentially an ignored medium. I chose to use expired Polaroid film with its imperfections. I embrace them. They symbolise an alternative world view and I adopted it as the voice I had been looking for. A dream world to tell my stories of love. These so called ’imperfections' of the expired Polaroid film reflect the way we remember and dream.
