Boulevard Montmartre, Paris, Busy Street View, Silver Gelatin B & W Photography
Located in Atlanta, GA
An original silver gelatin black and white photograph by Wide World Photos, Paris. A street view of Boulevard Montmartre in Paris, circa 1930. Features: Original Silver Gelatin Print Photograph Unframed. Press Photograph. Press Agency: Wide World Photos - The New York Times S.A. in Paris. Photographer: Anonymous. Title: busy street view of Boulevard Montmartre in Paris, circa 1930. Provenance: Private collection. Image Size: 6.54 in. high (16.6 cm) x 6.65 in. wide (11.8 cm) - Archivally matted in a 17 x 13 mat. The ink stamp at the back read: "Wide World Photos - The New York Times S.A. - 106 rue Réaumur, 100 - Paris - Tel: GUT 65-46 or 65-47 - Adr. Télég: TIMWIT-PARIS". A caption was probably glued to the back but has been removed. We will ship this piece in a mat (17 x 13 in.) that fits a standard-sized frame. About: Le Petit Casino, at 12 Boulevard Montmartre, is a show restaurant built in 1893 on the former site of the Oriental Bazaar and the Séraphin Theater. It closed its doors in 1948. On the left side of the photograph, you can see the front of La Maxeville brasserie-restaurant. La Grande Maxéville was founded in 1901. The architect Joachim Richard (1869-1960) designed the new Grande Maxéville. His son-in-law, Georges Roehrich, designed an establishment in a pure "Art Deco" style. Imagine the rooms covered with engraved mirrors, one story high - including the ceiling and we'll get a little idea of what this superb restaurant was like. Elves were dancing in swarms, on the blinds, on the walls, and on the ceiling. They symbolized the Parisian party and the joy of living and brought an undeniable touch of fantasy to this place. The "Grands Boulevards" at that time were still flourishing. Luxury shops were spreading out there. A nighttime activity allowed the restaurants to fill up very often. The theaters, including that of the variety show located on the opposite sidewalk, attracted a share of the clientele. During the day, people would come and sip a drink while listening to the orchestra. Many famous artists performed as "guest stars" at La Maxéville. The Grands Boulevards and mainly the Boulevard Montmartre have always been one of the centers of Paris, which exert the most attraction with tourists, Provincials, and Parisians. It is indeed the central artery of the capital. Many varied shops, cafes, restaurants, and shows throng the famous Boulevard. As soon as night falls, one by one, the signs light up, the facades light...

Brassaï Original Black & White Photograph of a Street Fair
Located in Larchmont, NY
BRASSAI (Hungarian–French, 1899-1984) Street Fair on the Place d'Italie, 1931 Medium: Sheet-fed Gravure Printing Date: 1970's Printed in the USA Image: 10 1/2 x 8 inches Framed: 14 1/2 x 12 inches Although his real nameis Gyula Halasz, he took the name Brassai from his birthplace, and it means someone who comes from Brasov. He used the name all his adult life and is known throughout the world as Brassai. He was of Hungarian ethnic origins. Brasov in Transylvania has been a part of Romania since the end of the First World War, and that region is still largely populated by ‘Romanain-Hungarians.’ Two of these became well known in the film industry: Bela Lugosi and Gabriel Pascal. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dismantled after the War, most of its territories were distributed amongst a number of nations. It was at this time that Transylvania returned to its earlier identity as part of Romania. Brassai had served in the Austro-Hungarian cavalry for the last year of the War, 1917-1918. After he settled in Paris in 1924, Brassai never returned to his homeland, remaining in exile for the rest of his life. His parents continued to live in Brasov but joined him for long visits in Paris. In 1949 Brassai became a French citizen, having been a stateless person since 1947. He fell in love with a French woman, Gilberte Boyer, and they married in 1948. Gilberte worked closely with her husband as he pursued his photographic career, helping him develop prints in his dark-room, and often writing descriptions of the subjects and personalities. It was also in 1949 that a book with 207 photographs of Picasso’s sculptures was published, with photographs by Brassai. He and Picasso became friends and the latter asked him to photograph his work for this volume. Brassai was a frequent visitor to Picasso’s studio and there he took several portraits of the artist. Brassai has become one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century with collectors all over the world seeking his work. In an era which produced several brilliant and inspired photographers, not least Brassai’s friend Man Ray, he was able to capture a quality of magic in the atmosphere, bordering on the supernatural. Many of his pictures were taken at night or in fog, a frequent condition in Paris in the early part of the twentieth century. Even his day time photographs capture a moment of eerie transition between the mundane and the surreal. He is on the doorstep of another world where time stands still. Light becomes spectral as if it is the breath of an invisible power. Figures seem set in amber. Wet cobbles seem to slither and flow. A Master of capturing the ordinary, Brassai saw things as they were but transmuted the scene through his use of the lens into something outside the ordinary. Brassai was a familiar figure prowling round Paris after dark with his camera and tripod and heavy bag of glass photographic plates. He was sometimes accompanied by Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, or Leon Paul...

The Showboat
Located in Carmel, CA
The Showboat (1933) is a vintage silver gelatin photograph by the renowned Ira Martin. This masterwork was so esteemed, that it was exhibited, in the 1930's, around the United States, including in Brooklyn, Chicago, East Orange, New York, Philadelphia and San Jose. This silver gelatin photograph exhibits the tonal qualities of a platinum print, and the photograph's composition is extraordinary. The content also exists on several levels. On a basic level, it appears to depict a 1930's crowd watching a barker and performers on the S.S. Duke Mills Showboat, while it is docked on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. However, after contemplating the photo, one sees much additional activity, including African American performers, beneath the word "Plantation", looking down on the show from the boat's balcony; two men holding a conversation and the shadows of a kissing couple reflected on the pavement in the left foreground. Equally remarkable is the near empty right upper quadrant, which depicts a furling American flag against a cerulean blue sky. Frankly, this photograph belongs in a museum, due to the historic uniqueness of a time, place and event that will never be captured in such a profound manner again. Signed by the photographer, recto (front) and verso (back). Ira Wright Martin (1886-1960) was a photographer who focused on architecture and street scenes, as well as abstract and still life works. Martin was raised in Michigan and became an aerial photographer for the Signal Corps...

Oggetto Matematico (Mathematical Object )
Located in Wien, 9
Man Ray is considered a representative of Dadaism and Surrealism. He was born in Philadelphia in 1890. Man Ray was active as a painter, object artist, photographer and film director. His art assemblages deal with questions about the unconscious, the apparent and the mythical. What is present behind what is represented or not is Ray's preoccupation in conceiving his experiments with different materials and techniques. He has his first solo exhibition at the Daniel Gallery in New York. Together with Marcel Duchamp he founded the DADA group in New York. In 1921 Ray moved to Paris, where he worked in the Montparnasse environment with artists such as Dalí, Ernst, Matisse, Miró, Mondrian and Tanguy. In 1922 there is a split in Paris between the Dadaists and the Surrealists. Man Ray joins the co-founders of Surrealism. National Socialism, which also showed its effects in Paris in the late 1930s, prompted the Jewish artist to decide to leave the country. After a major appearance at Georges Wildenstein's Beaux-Arts Gallery in Paris in the exhibition "Exposition Internationale du Surrealisme", he fled to New York via Spain and Portugal. After the Second World War, he brought the artistic collection he had left in Paris to the USA. As he could not enjoy the success and prestige in America that he had enjoyed in Paris, he returned to Paris in 1951. In 1958, the artist took part in the exhibition "Dada. Documents of a Movement" at the Kunstverein Düsseldorf and in the large Dada exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His first major retrospective is shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1966. Man Ray died in Paris in 1976, leaving behind the "Man Ray Trust", a foundation established by his widow. Between 1934-36 Man Ray photographed...
