Artist Biography -
Danziger Gallery is pleased to announce our ongoing representation of Christopher Anderson with a Viewing Room based on his new book “Pia”. The photographs will be exhibited at the Danziger Galleries in New York and Los Angeles in 2021.
A collection drawn from the hundreds if not thousands of photographs Anderson has taken of his family, “Pia” concentrates on Anderson’s daughter with appearances by his wife Marion, son Atlas, and the family dog Echo.
Continuing his fruitful relationship with Stanley/Barker publishers, “Pia” follows Anderson’s books “Son”, “Cop”, and “Approximate Joy” which we exhibited in 2018. (It should be noted that “Pia” sold out faster than any other book Stanley/Barker has published. It is currently being re-printed.) Mostly taken over a period of 6 years from 2014 to the present and when Pia was 2 to 8 years old, the photographs show Anderson as a master colorist, sensualist, and capturer of natural light. Uncontrived and yet beautifully composed, the photographs follow Pia who looks something like a young Paloma Picasso and is equally adored by the camera.
Anderson, a member of the Magnum photographer’s collective, first gained recognition for his photography in 1999 when his images of the rescue of Haitian boat refugees won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Other journalistic assignments have taken him all over the world while his personal projects and curiosity cover a wide swath. Alternating short photo stories with in depth projects, Anderson’s growing body of work represents his interests, his assignments, and the world he lives in.
Born in Canada and growing up in Texas, Anderson travelled the world before recently moving to Paris, where his wife is from. Much of “Pia” captures the transition of settling in a new place and there is an unmistakable Gallic flavor to many of the pictures as well as in Pia’s aura. As the Financial Times noted in their review of the book “backdrops come and go but personality is permanent”.
If there is a genre of images photographers take of their family, the stakes are extremely high, but Anderson’s photographs re-invigorate the genre in a way that is unique, classic, and modern.
