David Halliday
Pomegranates & Walnuts: Color Still Life Photograph of Fruits & Olive Branches

2017

About the Item

Color still life photograph of pomegranates and walnuts on a tabletop with figurative olive branches against a beige and white background 'Pomegranates and Walnuts' by David Halliday, 2017 archival pigment print, ed. of 10 37.5 x 26.5 inches unframed From a body of images in continuation of a series first began in Greece in 2007. While reminiscent of previous work in its examination of texture, shape, and form, his subjects take on a mind of their own, getting up and off the confines of the tabletop. His still lifes of found objects curiously resemble a moving figures. The images are often split at the middle into two planes, allowing David to articulate how he experiences color and material relationships. Tops or ‘heads’, if you will are mixed and matched with ‘torsos’ of olive and fig branches that pose against stucco walls in surroundings of dusty concrete. Halliday never ceases to intrigue viewers, as his subjects are transported from the mundane into a realm of fantastical beauty. This series promises to show the sublime inner workings of the artist’s mind. More about the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior view. Halliday was one of the first artists Carrie Haddad began representing when she opened the gallery 27 years ago. Since then he has exhibited nationally and in Europe. He now lives and works in Schodack Landing by way of New Orleans and Nantucket. • Clam Shells (Still Life Photograph of Purple & White Shells with Drift Wood)
    By David Halliday
    Located in Hudson, NY
Still life photograph of purple and white clam shells on pale grey and beige background archival pigment print, made in 2007 by David Halliday 10 X 15 inches unframed Edition of 25 In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of 'the ordinary' in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This nautical themed still life of deep purple and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a light grey table top against a cream colored wood wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects.
