About the Item
Inspired by Victorian era taxidermy dioramas, 'Dark Flora' is a series of photographs using wild plants and flowers in a curated yet naturalistic arrangement. The plants are foraged from forest clearings, hedgerows and roadside verges, often using humble and unassuming species rather than showy specimens so often used in floral photography. Each arrangement is gathered from within approximately a square mile and therefore represent seasonal ‘portraits’ of the local environments from which they came.
Dark Flora #7 - Fly Agaric.
A poisonous autumnal cornucopia of amanita muscaria mushrooms, (commonly known as fly agaric) sulphur tuft mushrooms, trumpet lichen, male fern, beech and bramble. Foraged from Sussex wealden woodland in early October.
"This image has been in my mind all year, waiting till the days shorten as we head into autumn until these fungi pushed upwards through the loam. Mushrooms are so delicate and begin to break down so quickly that I have not found it possible to bring them into the studio as part of a still life. It took 3 days of hunting and photographing the mushrooms in situ without picking them, then making red and white paper stand-ins to be able to compose and to cast correct shadows on the moss below. Long and laborious, but so worth it for the final image." - Jasper Goodall

Born in Birmingham in 1973, Jasper Goodall studied at the University of Brighton, graduating in 1995 from the BA Illustration course. He went on to become a highly influential illustrator and has worked with high profile clients from fashion brands to rock bands. Widely published and much referenced, he was best known for his editorials in The Face Magazine, Dazed & Confused and his creation of ethereal imagery for the English rock band Muse. He has had joint and solo shows in Tokyo, Hamburg and London. In 2014 he left the world of commercial image making and spent several years training as a counsellor at the Psychosynthesis Trust in London. This hiatus provided the opportunity to take stock and re-imagine his creative output in a new and very different form, and he began using a camera to make images. He has returned to a creative practice with a radically different body of work, using photography as a means of expression. Drawing on historical references, from Victorian taxidermy dioramas to romantic painting he seeks to articulate the hushed, waiting presence that is palpably felt between the dark boughs of a forest at night. "Through photography I seek to invoke reverence for the natural world. Using artificial lighting I depict the nocturnal landscape referencing the enchanted settings used in fairytales where the dark forest is understood as a metaphor for the unconscious.
These mysterious realms, although threatening, contain the potential for discovering riches if we can move past fear.
I hope that my images evoke a sense of the landscape containing magic, for if we can begin to relate to the natural world not as a resource to plunder, but an entity to come to know, love and revere, we may rekindle a much needed sacred relationship." - Jasper Goodall

About the project:
"Detritus' series was born from the twin frustrations of lockdown halting all planned projects, yet litter still somehow being dropped in abundance on my street.
With no idea of the final output, or indeed the hygiene implications, I started to collect, scan, and record what I found. When I realised these colourful misshapen objects could be turned into something beautiful, the frustrations left me and I began looking for other sources of Detritus.
These collages gave me purpose during the pandemic and allowed me to grow something beautiful from a place of frustration. My aim is to simply give viewers of the work a fleeting moment of calm.
Unable to shoot anything, I’ve been making collections of things I find on the ground and scanning them to create composite images of otherwise ignored or discarded objects." - George McLeod...

For Scout A, Very Good Dog: Modern Baroque Style Floral Still Life Digital Print
By Lisa A. Frank
Located in Hudson, NY
Archival digital print, edition of 50
34 x 29.5 inches unframed
Lisa Frank’s new body of work produces complex arrangements of flowers and dark vegetation reminiscent of Baroque still lifes and tapestry. Frank stages, duplicates and then layers photographic elements to create work that keeps the viewer fixated in her realm of digitally manipulated imagination. In this piece, the artist has digitally collaged twisted vines, dried leaves, pink, yellow, and purple flowers, and turtle shells in intricate patterns to resemble a Baroque tapestry. The contemporary vertical digital print is available in additional sizes.
Artist's Statement:
I make large scale photographs that depict complex patterns. These patterns are composed from elements of nature and are presented in the form of traditional wallpaper...
