Fred W. McDarrah, 1926-2007 Veteran Village Voice photographer Fred W. McDarrah Over a 50-year span, McDarrah documented the rise of the Beat Generation, the city’s postmodern art movement, its off-off-Broadway actors, troubadours, politicians, agitators and social protests. Fred captured Jack Kerouac frolicking with women at a New Year’s bash in 1958, Andy Warhol adjusting a movie-camera lens in his silver-covered factory, and Bob Dylan offering a salute of recognition outside Sheridan Square near the Voice’s old office. Not just a social chronicler, McDarrah was a great photo-journalist. For years, McDarrah was the Voice's only photographer and, for decades, he ran the Voice’s photo department, where he helped train dozens of young photographers, including James Hamilton, Sylvia Plachy, Robin Holland and Marc Asnin. His mailbox was simply marked "McPhoto." Jack Mitchell, (1925-2013) bulging photographic portfolio of actors, writers, painters, musicians and especially dancers describes a pictorial history of the arts in the late 20th century. Mr. Mitchell, who took hundreds of pictures for The New York Times, was both a portraitist and a capturer of complex motion. An expert in lighting, he worked mostly, though not entirely, in black and white, and he was known — by his subjects, by the magazine and newspaper editors he worked for, and by critics — as someone who could make a photograph reveal character. Jack Mitchell was the official photographer for the American Ballet Theater, and he chronicled the work of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for more than thirty years. About the artist: CAROL MARINO (Canadian, b. United States, 1943) In reaction to the industrial landscape of Pittsburgh, where she grew up, Carol Marino responds to her present, comparatively untouched environment with a certain instinctive attachment to it. Photographing near and around her home in northern Ontario, she focuses on flora and fauna in their natural habitats. This is ,,Golf@Monument'' from my international awarded Series Playing Games around the World. I was born in Romania, where I spent my childhood and teenage years until I was nineteen. My exposure to foreign art, literature, music or cinema was a severely limited one, due the oppressive and authoritarian nature of the communist regime. Traveling outside the country was also strictly forbidden and I remember that one of my biggest desire at that time was to have the freedom to travel the world and explore new horizons outside our border. This dream ended up becaming reality, when 1989 the romanian party leader was overthrown and not only for me but for all the people inside the country a new chapter began. I menage to leave Romania, and move to Germany where I settled since. My photography journey began in 2010 and my work was mainly composed of staged portraits, but as me and my husband started traveling more often,I fell in love with the beauty of nature, which led my focus slowly shifting over the years. As a by product of this transformation, in 2017 I began the photo Series ,,Playing Games Around The World''. Started in Iceland, continued through the USA, Jordan, Turkey, this series is a display of my endless gratitude for the freedom that I own now. A freedom that enables me to discover a world hidden from me for so many years. In this breathtaking environments i love to stage little scenes with colorful small figures acting and playing funny games together.
