Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002.
Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently.

Eva Korn was born in Czechoslovakia and a Holocaust surviver, Eva emigrated to the United States in 1953 from Switzerland, where she was studying photography. Photographs she had taken in 1951 of the then-new country of Israel were exhibited in Switzerland at the World Exhibit of Photography. In 1997 28 of her 1951 black & white photographs were exhibited, along with color photographs of Israel taken in 1996, as "Envision Israel: The Land, The Heart, The People." The show traveled for 12 months through the East Bay area of California. In the U.S. she continued her work as a photographer, married the penologist Richard Ross Korn (1923-2002)
Eva Korn spent her childhood in Bratislava, Slovakia; her education; family visits to Vienna, Austria; how this became more difficult after the Anschluss in 1938; the institution of anti-Jewish laws in 1939; working illegally as a seamstress; the deportations that began in 1942; her memories of her mother and brother's deportation to Ravensbruck and Sachsenhausen; the false identity papers she was able to obtain; her arrest in January 1945; her transport to Sered concentration camp and then Theresienstadt; the conditions in Theresienstadt; her return to Bratislava at the end of the war; her immigration to Switzerland in 1947; her immigration to the United States in 1951; her life in the United States; her marriage; and her experiences with reconciliation to heal the trauma of the war. a collection of photographs by Eva Korn, will be on display throughout the festival. The history of photography has always included the genre of the nude. In the last decade, there is a new perspective in considering the female form. Women photographers are able to capture the nude, not from a position of who holds the power in the relationship, to more of an examination of form without the whisper of sexuality. I have recently revisited my exploration of nudes, this time only from behind the camera. My revelation is that I perceive the subject as a whole, complex human being, giving me the gift of seeing them profoundly. The performance of photographer and subject is on equal footing as we both work within an area of trust and curiosity. What are we really revealing to the camera as one stands before it? Ultimately the experience connects us not only in our shared experience, but as two women, both bringing a level of acceptance and courage to our efforts. It is exhilarating to change the masculine history of photography into a feminine one.

Lawrence Schiller only remembers the 60s in this way: Fast. As in: Blur. Which is, for those who lived through it, as accurate a description as one is likely to find about the decade that began with optimism and ended in chaos. It was ten years of turmoil and exploration. And through this turbulent and tumultuous decade, it often seemed that whenever a headline-making news event occurred, Lawrence Schiller was there. Schiller was not just lucky to be in the right place at the right time; he was prescient. He was there to cover the event, to add to it, to help us see it, to aid its meaning and its depth. "It was a time in which things happened awfully fast," Schiller says of the decade. "It was a wild, wild period; an uncontrolled period. I don’t think you had any sense of perspective in the 60s. You had to wait and look back at it, because it was a period in which things were happening that had no rhyme or reason to it. But by the end of the ‘60s I had covered so many stories, had so many magazine covers, I had somehow become part of that decade’s history. And I already had my eye on the future."
When Lawrence Schiller got the assignment from the French magazine, Paris Match to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the 20th Century Fox set of Something’s Got to Give, he thought nothing of it. It wasn’t to be a private, studio shoot. He wasn’t going to set up lights, create backgrounds, or use a tripod. Just another assignment, he figured. Monroe by then was firmly established as a figment in the imagination of most young men. The orphan Norma Jean had recreated herself as the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. She’d appeared in twenty-nine films by the time Schiller photographed her in black and white and color in May, 1962. The world was unprepared for the moment when Marilyn jumped in the swimming pool in a flesh-colored bikini and came up out of the water au natural. Through memory, metaphor, and imagined destinies, “There’s No Other Like Your
Mother” seeks to explore the complexities and constructs of female identity and the
maternal subject as I reconceive my fertile state of being. The sudden death of my
mother prompted the (re)birth of my artistic self at the age of 29 and the emergence
of this series which contemplates my own shifting identity, once firmly rooted in the
domestic tradition but now seemingly unmoored.
Brandy Trigueros is a Los Angeles based artist who uses the narrative space of
the camera to playfully create staged inquisitions of femininity, memoir, and the
on-going transformation of self. After years of working in publishing at the Los
Angeles Times and animation at Nickelodeon, she began pursuing her artistic
practice full-time and received her BFA in Photography and Media from California
Institute of the Arts.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in venues such as the
