About the Item

A large scale abstract interior scene with bold black, white, red, pink, green, white and orange patterns and brushstrokes, based on an abstract oil painting. Pink and purple dots, yellow, orange and brown brushstrokes are contained within a black border. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, his work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract. In a French Restaurant (Knoedler Gallery), Howard Hodgkin. Paper 47.5 x 57.2 in. / 121 x 146 cm. 29 color screen print on heavy stock signed by the artist 'Hodgkin' lower right in red crayon. Created by the artist for his exhibition at Knoedler Gallery, New York, 1980, it reproduces the eponymous oil painting, 1977-1979 to the same size as the painting itself. The 29 printings meticulously mirror the richly painted original. Printed by Cromacomp, published by Petersburg Press, New York, on TH Saunders Waterford white wove paper. This vibrant screen print positions Howard Hodgkin’s painting “In a French Restaurant” on a black background, with white text at the bottom reading “Howard Hodgkin Paintings Knoedler Gallery New York 1980.” Sheer layers of bright red cover stripes of yellow, terra cotta, and brown. Dots of pink, marks originally painted with the artist’s hand and fingers, overlay dark purple shapes. Deep green and turquoise are marked with navy, cobalt blue, and pale pink. Towards the top of the poster, a French flag is pictured hanging diagonally. 29 layers of color build up a rich, pigmented surface that mimics that of a painting. While the work pictured is abstract, the title implies that the space is that of a restaurant, perhaps viewed from above. Hodgkin’s other works in the Knoedler Gallery show are also named for places and scenes, featuring an artist studio, someone reading a book, eating dinner, and a still life in a restaurant. Hodgkin was interested in extracting the feeling of scenes: the emotion and energy of a single moment, though the physical settings were often abstracted beyond recognition. While many posters are four color photographic reproductions, this vintage poster is an original 29 color screen print designed by the artist and printed on high-quality paper in a signed unnumbered edition of 500.

DH in Hollywood (David Hockney) Howard Hodgkin colorful abstract painting framed
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Howard Hodgkin based this print on a trip he took to visit his good friend and fellow Petersburg Press collaborator David Hockney in Los Angeles. The mid-eighties saw new levels of abstraction in Hodgkin’s work, building exuberantly off the ambiguous spaces of his earlier work. The artist used six colors of paint, producing a unique depth and texture to each print in this edition. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in DH in Hollywood at Petersburg Press, where he was a long-time collaborator. Soft-ground etching allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, giving his prints the characteristic black brushstrokes seen in this print. Paper 8.4 x 11 in. / 21.3 × 27.9 cm Soft-ground etching (from one plate) with hand coloring in watercolor (orange-red, brown, and green) and oil pastel (red and...

A Furnished Room Howard Hodgkin, colorful abstract red green interior scene
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Abstract red, green and grey interior scene with lines, shapes and hand painted brushstroke texture. Colorful large scale work ideal for display in minimalist, modern and contemporary spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract. Paper 21.25 x 27.25 in. / 54 x 69 cm Softground etching and aquatint (from two plates) with hand coloring in watercolor (green and orange). Signed by the artist and dated 77 lower right in pencil; numbered lower left in pencil. This print was proofed by Daniel Levy and printed and hand-colored by Ken Farley at Claes Oldenburg’s studio in New York, which Petersburg Press was using at the time. 1977 heralded a breakthrough in Hodgkin’s prints showing an increase in emotional content and intensity. They are more fluid and lush due to an increased looseness of handling. They show a richness and a surface texture previously lacking – mainly due to the application of gouache or watercolor by hand but also to the more tonal techniques of aquatint and soft-ground etching with its chalk-like lines. This print amongst others of the period was prompted by a visit to Tulsa, Oklahoma and represents an interior scene. Catalogue Reference: Elizabeth Knowles...

Souvenir, Howard Hodgkin: large scale black white gray abstract interior scene
By Howard Hodgkin
Located in New York, NY
Very large scale black and white abstract interior scene with dots, lines, brushstrokes, paint daubs, fingerprints, squares and rectangles. Striking print to hang in contemporary, modern and minimalist spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is more painterly, expressionist, and abstract. Paper 45 x 55 in. / 114.3 x 139.7 cm. Souvenir by Howard Hodgkin. Screenprint on Arches aquarelle mould-made paper. Signed by the artist with initials and dated 80 in pencil lower center, numbered in pencil lower left. This bold Howard Hodgkin print layers five shades of black, with a wide variety of marks including some from the artist’s fingerprints and hand. Scribbles and lines of grey loosely define what could be an interior space with furniture. As is typical of his prints, there is a sense of space, and of the passage of time, expressed through shapes that seem to recede through the picture, deep black shades and, unusually for Hodgkin’s work, the white of the paper showing through. The last photograph displays these rich surface textures on the sheet at an angle. Catalogue reference: Elizabeth Knowles...
