About the Item

Artist: (after) Jasper Johns (American, 1930-) Title: "Flag III" Series: Facsimile Catalogue of Jasper Johns Prints *Issued unsigned Year: 1975 Medium: Offset-Lithograph on cream Arches paper Limited edition: 300 Printer: Bill Goldston and James V. Smith of Universal Limited Art Editions, Inc., West Islip, NY Publisher: Universal Limited Art Editions, Inc., West Islip, NY Sheet size: 22.5" x 17.5" Image size: 9.25" x 13.75" Condition: In excellent condition Rare Notes: Provenance: private collection - Los Angeles, CA. Comes from the "Facsimile Catalogue of Jasper Johns Prints" series which was printed in 1975 and published in 1986. Telemon Editions Limited seal within the image lower right. Arches watermark lower right. Information printed on verso as issued. The image reproduced on this print is Johns' 1960 lithograph edition "Flag III", (ULAE No. 7; Field No. 7; Sparks No. 7, page 348). This facsimile print was made at and by Universal Limited Art Editions in West Islip, NY under the supervision of the artist Jasper Johns himself. Tatyana Grosman started Telamon Editions Limited in 1970 as a commercial venture of Universal Limited Art Editions. It was closed upon her death in 1982. Among her initial projects was a facsimile catalogue of Jasper Johns prints published by ULAE. The format for the catalogue was 22.5 x 17.5 inches and was to be printed in an edition of 300 on the same paper as the original limited editions prints. A hand-fed offset press was purchased in 1971 to proof and print the project. 13 facsimiles were printed on the hand-fed offset press by Bill Goldston and James V. Smith under the supervision of the artist before 1982 when it was abandoned for the complete catalogue raisonne published in 1993. Other than their size, the paper, color and printing sequence match the original edition. The facsimiles are not signed by the artist and the Telamon Editions Limited seal appears within the images to ensure no confusion with the original editions.
