Composition VIII - Lithograph by Joan Mirò - 1974

1974

About the Item

Composition VIII is a wonderful color lithograph on paper, realized in 1974 by the Spanish master Joan Miro for the second volume of his catalog "Mirò Lithographe". This plate is from a series composed by an original lithograph for the cover and other eleven original lithographs, two additional lithographs are reserved for the deluxe edition with an edition of 150 specimens. Reference: Mirò Lithographe III, Maeght Editeur, Paris, pag. 31. In good conditions, except for some visible stains on the higher margin at the center and a medial vertical fold of the paper at the center of the sheet. While Joan Miró (1893-1983) rejected any formal association with movements or groups, including the Surrealists, André Breton recognized him as “the most Surrealist of us all”. His artistic approach encouraged the free play of associations, and envisaged “accidents” to provoke reactions closely connected to subconscious experiences. Miró’s famous motifs consist of freely reshaped fragments cut from catalogs for machinery on canvases to form black silhouettes – solid or in outline, with dramatic accents of white and red.

In one of his most famous paintings, The Jungle (1943), these various influences are melded together, onto a single large-scale canvas. Born Wifredo Oscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, Cuba, the painter moved to Madrid, Spain in 1923 to study with Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor, who had been the teacher of famed Surrealist Salvador Dalí. Lam moved to Paris after seeing an exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s work in Spain. Having arrived in Paris, he introduced himself to Picasso who subsequently showed Lam his collection of primitive artworks...

He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York, and the Woodstock School of Painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Trains, trucks, and industrial buildings were what Karl Fortess envisioned when the Public Works of Art Project suggested that he depict “the American Scene.” His work bears the influence of Surrealism, Russsian Constructivist art and Cubism.
