Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition.
About Alan Shields:
Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper Gallery for over twenty years. Important museum exhibitions of the artist’s work include “Alan Shields: Common Threads,” Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY (2018); “Alan Shields: Protracted Simplicity (1966-1985),” Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, CO (2016); “Alan Shields: In Motion,” Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY (2015); “Into the Maze,” SITE Santa Fe, NM (2014); “Stirring Up the Waters,” Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, NY (2007); “Alan Shields: A Survey,” The Beach Museum of Art, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS (1999); “1968 – 1983: The Work of Alan Shields,” Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis, TN (1983), which traveled to Lowe Art Museum, Coral Gables, FL, and Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; and “Alan Shields: Paintings and Prints,” Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, MA (1981). Shields is represented in the collections of prominent institutions including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, N;, Tate Collection, London, UK; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.

Alan Shields (1944 - 2005) is known for making art out of just about anything, often using sewing techniques coupled with painting, tie-dying, or wire bending. The critic Robert Hughes called Shields, "a brilliant bricoleur." Shields came to the notice of the art world virtually overnight after an exhibition in 1969 at the Paula Cooper Gallery, New York. By the mid-70's Shields was a focus of the contemporary art world and in 1973 was featured on the cover of Artforum. Today Shields' work can be found in the collections of many major American museums, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Untitled (PPR406) - Original Colorful Abstract Mixed Media Artwork on Paper
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Max Manning is a Houston-based painter whose practice he describes as “algorithmic abstraction”, studio-built systems that he deliberately disrupts to create compositions where loosely figurative fragments, patterns, and color fields collide. Working in series, Manning sets up rule-driven visual frameworks such as grids, repeated motifs, cut-outs, and layered shapes, and then interrupts them through shifts in palette, gesture, and scale. The result is a retro-contemporary language: paintings that acknowledge a world shaped by data and screens while insisting on the tactility, stillness, and breath of paint.
• One-of-a-kind abstract artwork on paper measuring 20 x 16 inches
• Unframed and signed by the artist on the back
• Includes certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery
• Convenient local Los Angeles delivery available
• Affordable Continental U.S. and international shipping available
Across his practice, Manning has maintained a clear studio ethos: to “paint through the questions” of life lived alongside algorithms. Instead of reproducing digital aesthetics, he uses rule sets to destabilize them—allowing glitches, misalignments, and pauses to surface. The work’s visual “systems” act less like predictive code and more like open, humanized structures where attention can rest. This stance has resonated with curators and collectors attuned to abstraction’s current arc: grounded in art-historical form, responsive to contemporary cognition, and committed to the slow time of looking.
Manning earned a BFA in Two-Dimensional Studies from Bowling Green State University (2011) and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati (2014). His work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad and gained early institutional and critical attention through selection for the 2017 Texas Biennial, curated by Leslie Moody Castro, with press coverage in Texas arts media.
