This is a laminated giclée on aluminium composite panel, hand signed and numbered on the label on the back. Studland Bay belongs to a limited edition of 601 works.
This piece is part of the ’Where the Land Meets the Sea’ limited edition series, which gathers some artworks taken from Damien Hirst's latest series ’Coast Paintings’, ’Sea Paintings’ and ’Seascapes’.
This work in particular called Studland Bay is an edition of the original painting entitled CP12, which belongs to the ’Coast Paintings’ series. Created in 2019, ’Coast Paintings’ are named after some British coastal locations. Over a grey background, which represents England's grey skies in winter, the explosive colorful drops and splashes try to depict the energy, excitement and change that the artist experiments by the seaside of his native island in winter. The ’Coast Paintings’ are intended to give a feeling of light fragmented in angry seas. Damien Hirst represents this passion using the same colorful palette that can be found on the artist's acclaimed ’Cherry Blossoms’ series.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Damien Hirst is a British contemporary artist born on June 7, 1965, in Bristol, England. He is best known for his controversial works, which often explore themes of death, mortality, and the human condition. Hirst rose to fame in the 1990s as one of the leaders of the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement, a group of artists who gained international recognition for their avant-garde and often shocking works.
Hirst grew up in Leeds, North Yorkshire, and moved to London in 1984 to study Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. It was there that he first gained attention for his work, particularly his installations, which often included live animals in formaldehyde-filled tanks. His earliest notable work was "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" (1991), a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde and displayed in a glass tank.
Hirst's art is often characterized by its use of unexpected materials, such as live animals, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. He is also known for his exploration of the themes of mortality and the fragility of life. Some of his most famous works include "For the Love of God" (2007), a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with over 8,000 diamonds, and "The Golden Calf" (2008), a life-size sculpture of a calf made entirely of 18-carat gold.
Throughout his career, Hirst has been a controversial figure in the art world, with some critics accusing him of creating works solely for shock value. However, his work has also been celebrated for its innovation and its ability to provoke conversation and challenge traditional notions of art.
In addition to his work as an artist, Hirst has also been involved in various other projects. Damien Hirst
British artist Damien Hirst is widely considered the enfant terrible of contemporary art. He is the most prominent of the so-called Young British Artists, or YBAs, a group, largely composed of Hirst’s classmates at Goldsmiths, in London, that began exhibiting together in warehouses and factories after 1988 and is known for the use of unconventional materials and “shock tactics.”
In the 1990s, Hirst said, “I can’t wait to get into a position to make really bad art and get away with it.” And indeed, he is notorious for piquing critics and baffling the public with such pieces as his signature glass vitrines containing dead sheep or sharks in formaldehyde, and his diamond-encrusted skull, For the Love of God.
Working primarily in sculpture, Hirst takes after French modernist master Marcel Duchamp in his use of ready-made objects and materials, which he combines to ironic effect. He often creates in series, as with The Cure (Violet) and The Cure (Turquoise), both from 2014, which are among several pill paintings referencing Andy Warhol’s embrace of mass production. Belonging to his ongoing series of “spot” paintings, begun in the 1980s, the 2005 piece Xylene Cyanol Dye Solution is striking for its machinelike, industrial uniformity and almost childlike simplicity, a seeming rebuke to the idea of the artist-as-genius.
In addition to making art, Hirst has launched stores that sell editioned works (Other Criteria), a restaurant (Pharmacy2) and even his own London museum (Newport Street Gallery).
