San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs and woodcuts printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, Milan, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Amilcare Pizzi, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. The 1960 issue, XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, No. 14, showcased Daphnis et Chloe, one of Chagalls most celebrated lithographic subjects, coinciding with his work on the monumental suite of lithographs inspired by the same pastoral tale, published by Teriade. Through this publication, San Lazzaro further cemented Chagalls reputation as the modern poet of color and love, uniting myth, nature, and emotion in visual form. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential record of 20th century modernism, celebrated for its seamless integration of fine art, literature, and design. About the Artist: Dorothea Tanning (1910–2012) was an American painter, sculptor, printmaker, and writer whose extraordinary seven decade career established her as one of the most original, visionary, and influential figures in 20th century art, producing a body of work that moved seamlessly from meticulously rendered Surrealist tableaux to the lyrical, psychologically charged abstractions that defined her mature style; emerging in an era shaped by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, she developed a fiercely independent aesthetic grounded in symbolic metamorphosis, subconscious narrative, dream logic, and a deep exploration of identity and desire. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, she moved to New York in 1936 and discovered Surrealism through MoMAs landmark Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism exhibition, a transformative encounter that propelled her into the heart of the movement; by the early 1940s she had formed profound creative relationships with Marcel Duchamp, Yves Tanguy, Leonor Fini, Kay Sage, Man Ray, and Max Ernst whom she married in 1946 while producing iconic works such as Birthday, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and The Guest Room, which fused masterful draftsmanship with uncanny psychological drama. In the 1950s and 1960s, Tanning evolved into a looser, ecstatic semi abstraction in which bodies dissolve into light, movement, and subconscious sensation, a breakthrough that prefigured later developments in feminist art, contemporary abstraction, and post Surrealist narrative painting; her soft fabric sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s sensual, unsettling hybrid forms became landmarks of Surrealist object making and influenced Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Eva Hesse, Mona Hatoum, and numerous contemporary artists exploring psychological and corporeal themes. Her work is held by the worlds leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, Tate, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and SFMOMA, confirming her central importance to the evolution of modern and contemporary art. Tannings fearless imagination, emotional intensity, and visionary engagement with the subconscious continue to influence contemporary Surrealism, feminist art, and psychological abstraction. The highest auction record for Dorothea Tanning was achieved on November 12, 2018, when Tempete sold for 1,572,500 USD at Sothebys New York.
