About the Artist – Eduardo Chavez (1917–1995) Born in Wagon Mound, New Mexico, Eduardo Chavez was a celebrated illustrator, muralist, painter, sculptor, and lithographer. He studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, training under influential artists like Boardman Robinson, Frank Mechau, Arnold Blanch, and Peppino Mangravite. Before serving in World War II, Chavez contributed to numerous public murals across the Western United States. After the war, he settled in Woodstock, New York, joining a thriving post-war artistic community that included Bruce Currie, Fletcher Martin, Edward Millman, and Ethel Magafan. He became a key figure in the Woodstock Art Association and held memberships in the National Academy of Design and the National Society of Mural Painters. Chavez earned prestigious awards, including a Tiffany Grant (1948), a Fulbright Award (1951), and the Childe Hassam Award (1953). He taught at the Art Students League (1954–1958), was a visiting professor at Colorado College (1959–1960), and served as a professor at Syracuse University (1960–1962). Exhibitions & Collections Chavez’s work was exhibited at major institutions, including the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). His artworks are held in prestigious collections such as the Library of Congress Print Collection, MoMA, Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Museum of New Mexico. His WPA murals can be found in West High School (Denver, CO) and U.S. Post Offices in Center, TX, Geneva, NE, and Glenwood Springs, CO. "Gothic Towers" is a rare and collectible piece from Chavez’s modernist period, making it an excellent addition to any mid-century or abstract art collection.
