About the Item

Small vintage hand signed and dated graphic. limited edition. Erling Jørgensen, 1905-1977 Born in Denmark, self taught artist. painter and graphic. print-maker. Danish painter and graphic artist. Jørgensen was autodidact and painted first in a naturalist style, but inspired by the Cobra painters, Svavar Gudnason and others, he gradually developed a fabulous style of abstract expressionism. For example, his contribution to the decoration of Bregnerødhytten (1949, now Sophienholm) and Painting (1966, Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum). Jørgensen was co-founder and member of the Spiral from 1947, of PRO 1964-66 and of the Colorists from 1967. He received the Eckersberg Medal in 1970. He worked in an Abstract Expressionist style infused with bold colors. known for his silkscreen, lithograph and serigraph works. Erling Jørgensen adapted in early 1940, after preliminary experiments in light naturalist style, the ruling abstract form of the time with emphasis on the colouristic expression. The early images feature a detail of abstract elements and organic shapes, often with surrealist undertones. The color is applied with dense pastes, which make the whole appear as a color-saturated substance with a plastic character. Over time, the compositions simplify into a clearer and more stringent form, sometimes composed of fewer elements and in a clean and clear color scheme. The character of these images alternates between the spontaneously abstract, mastery, geometric floral painting and vitality of the kaleidoscopic pattern images. In connection with the Cobra group's meetings, he participated in the decoration of the lofty areas in the Bregnerød cabin (now on Sophienholm). He was a member of the Spiralen Association of Artists, which in the 1950s was a gathering place for a number of individualistic painters. Travels, trips to Paris, South France and Amsterdam.
