Excerpted from the folio (translated from French): Taken from this special issue of “Behind the Mirror,” CCCL examples on velin de Rives were numbered, constituting the original edition of L’Hommage a Georges Braque. These deluxe examples also included an etching based on Trois oiseaux sur fond violet. The lithographs for this issue were printed in the ateliers of Maeght Editeur, Levallois. The text was printed by Fequet et Baudier, typographers. Finished printing May 13, 1964.

Established by Aime Maeght in 1946, Derriere le Miroir (“Behind the Mirror”) became a cornerstone of modern art publishing, pairing original lithographs with essays and poetry in homage to the most significant artists of the 20th century. Each issue corresponded to exhibitions at Galerie Maeght in Paris and was printed in collaboration with renowned ateliers including Mourlot Freres and Maeght Editeur.
The 1964 triple issue L’Hommage a Georges Braque was published shortly after the artist’s passing, celebrating his lifelong innovations in Cubism and poetic abstraction. The lithographs from this issue, including Ajax (Ajax), evoke the serene monumentality of Braque’s late work—where myth, memory, and geometry converge in quiet equilibrium.
About the artist:
Georges Braque (1882–1963) was a central figure in 20th-century art, best known for his collaboration with Pablo Picasso in developing Cubism. His early association with Fauvism gave way to a radical exploration of form and perspective that transformed modern visual language.
Throughout his career, Braque’s art balanced the intellectual rigor of structure with the lyricism of intuition. His later works, often inspired by mythological or symbolic subjects, reflect a meditative refinement of his earlier Cubist innovations. Braque’s influence extended across painting, printmaking, and sculpture, shaping generations of artists and thinkers. In 2013, his painting Paysage a la Ciotat sold at Sotheby’s for $15.8 million USD, setting the world record for the artist.
