Gerhard Richter, P08-P11 C-Print on aluminum (Portfolio of 4) Edition 323 of 500 Published by HENI P8: 33 x 44 cm (12.9 x 17.3 in) P9: 50 x 40 cm (19.6 x 15.7 in) P10: 50 x 40 cm (19.6 x 15.7 in) P11: 37 x 50 cm (14.5 x 19.6 in) Numbered, accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher Editions form an important part of Gerhard Richter's œuvre. From 1965 onwards he has produced prints, photographs, oil paintings, artist's books, multiples, and posters in the edition as they offer the artist a chance to explore creative possibilities in, especially diverse and experimental ways. "Theory has nothing to do with a work of art. Pictures which are interpretable, and which contain a meaning, are bad pictures. A picture presents itself as the Unmanageable, the Illogical, the Meaningless. It demonstrates the endless multiplicity of aspects; it takes away our certainty, because it deprives a thing of its meaning and its name." — Gerhard Richter Lately, Richter was increasingly focused on his Abstract Paintings. Based on Gerhard Richter´s Flow paintings, which were created by capturing poured enamel paints on a glass surface, these editions are chromatographic prints of high-resolution photographs of the originals, mounted on aluminum. The artist refers to them as "facsimile objects", as, even if they proceed indeed from the Flow paintings, this series distinguishes from the originals in some aspects: in some cases, they are presented differently by the artist; in others, they represent the only version of paintings that no longer exist. This exclusive series was released by Serpentine Galleries. GERHARD RICHTER Born on February 9th, 1932, in Dresden, Germany, Richter was raised during the Second World War becoming an artist in Eastern Germany and escaping Communism in 1961. His life has followed a series of historical events whose memories are kept alive through his work. "Of course, my landscapes are not only beautiful or nostalgic, with a Romantic or classical suggestion of lost Paradises, but above all 'untruthful'; and by 'untruthful' I mean the glorifying way we look at nature." —Gerhard Richter From the beginning, Richter explored different paths simultaneously, alternating between the abstract and the figurative, developing a profusion of themes, mediums, and techniques. Deeply affected by the Second World War, he made forays into his own memory as well as that of Germany. History continuing as the dominant theme, he worked from photographs: from an annihilated Dresden, to the Baader-Meinhof gang, to the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Ever unpredictable, Richter has found inspiration in the classic Italian Grand Masters such as Titian (Annunciation after Titian) and painted an immense multi-coloured checkerboard (Colour Chart). When the artist, who has never adhered to any particular convention, fashion, or trend, embarked on his most abstract series (Abstract Paintings), his innovative; overturning buckets of colour that he proceeded to crush onto ten-meter square canvases.

This edition of Forever features bright, abstract details from Damien Hirst’s new series of paintings titled Cherry Blossoms. Here, Hirst reinterprets the traditional subject of landscape painting on a monumental scale, entirely covering the surface of the works with bright colours that stretch the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. The vibrant works pay homage to the Pointillism and Impressionism art movements. With the Cherry Blossoms series Hirst bridges his explorations and examination of colour as well as its effect on the eye, where movement and dynamicity of colour have been composed freely and joyously by the British artist. “The Cherry Blossoms are about beauty and life and death. They’re garish and messy and fragile and about me moving away from Minimalism and the idea of an imaginary mechanical painter and that’s so exciting to me.” —Damien Hirst This limited fine art edition is technically created by a bright Laminated Giclée print on aluminium composite panel, comes in two sizes and was realized in collaboration with Fondazione Prada to support Save the Children Italia. Hirst has taken existing imagery from his Cherry Blossoms and transposed it into a print, depicting a close up of the densely layered impasto structure, as well as colourful dabs of paint from sections of the large-scale canvases, one can see Hirst's thick brushstrokes and trace the movement of his gestural action painting through the surface. DAMIEN HIRST The Turner prize winner and epicenter of the YBA movement. Hirst's emblematic art of our era revolutionizes the art market. Hirst is widely regarded as one of the most important artists working today, creating truly iconic artworks. A genuine star of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement, Damien Hirst has always made a point of mixing up different media. Whether as a sculptor, an installation artist, a painter, or a printmaker, Hirst has produced many of the most spectacular and widely discussed works in recent years and helped to revolutionize the art market. Damien Hirst’s, For the Love of God, the diamond-encrusted replica of the skull of a thirty-five-year-old man from the thirteenth century, broke all records to become the most expensive contemporary artwork in the world. Damien Hirst´s artworks are truly emblematic icons of our era, with their recurring motives such as dots, butterflies, cows, sharks, skulls, pills, and pharmacy cabinets. “I do believe art is more powerful than money, though. I still believe that. And if I ever find out money's more important, I'll knock it on the head.”—Damien Hirst His works, captivating and intense as they are, challenge our stereotyped concepts and beliefs. (Artist Authorized) Not signed, edition of 3433 12 1/2 × 16 1/2 inches Unframed This striking limited edition color plate, printed on GardaMatt Art 250 GSM paper with full margins, was published on the occasion of the major twin Richter exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Art (Abstract Pictures) and the Museum of Modern Art (Gerhard Richter, 40 Years of Painting), and it depicts Richters 1999 Oil on Aluminum abstract picture, catalogue raisonne reference, 858-6. This print is unframed, unnumbered and in excellent condition. More about Gerhard Richter: Gerhard Richter was born in 1932 in Dresden, Germany. Throughout his career, Richter has negotiated the frontier between photography and painting, captivated by the way in which these two seemingly opposing practices speak to and challenge one another. From exuberant canvases rendered with a squeegee and acerbic color charts to paintings of photographic detail and close-ups of a single brushstroke, Richter moves effortlessly between the two mediums, reveling in the complexity of their relationship, while never asserting one above the other. Richter’s life traces the defining moments of twentieth-century history and his work reverberates with the trauma of National Socialism and the Holocaust. In the wake of the Second World War, Richter trained in a Socialist Realist style sanctioned by East Germany’s Communist government. When he defected to West Germany in 1961, a month before the Berlin Wall was erected, Richter left his entire artistic oeuvre up to that point behind. From 1961 to 1964—alongside Blinky Palermo and Sigmar Polke—Richter studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he began to explore the material, conceptual, and historical implications of painting without ideological restraint. Richter’s earliest paintings in Düsseldorf, stimulated by a fascination with current affairs and popular culture, responded to images from magazines and newspaper cuttings. Through the 1960s, Richter continued to address found and media images of subjects such as military jets, portraits, and aerial photographs. Notably, he reimagined family pictures he had smuggled from East Germany that included his smiling uncle Rudi, dressed in a Nazi uniform...
