About the Item

This exquisite linocut by Gino Severini (1883–1966), titled Gravure futuriste (Futurist Engraving), from the album XXe siecle, Chroniques du jour, 13 rue Valette (5e), Directeur G. di San Lazzaro, Sommaire du no. 5/6, 1939, originates from the 1939 edition published by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, in collaboration with Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. Gravure futuriste exemplifies Severini’s synthesis of rhythm, balance, and structure—an elegant convergence of Futurist dynamism and Cubist geometry rendered with lyrical precision and intellectual clarity. Executed as a linocut on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Gino Severini (1883–1966) was an Italian painter, muralist, and theorist whose pioneering synthesis of Futurism, Cubism, and Classical Modernism established him as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. A founding member of the Futurist movement and one of its most intellectually rigorous voices, Severini transformed the visual language of modern art through his exploration of rhythm, motion, and balance—expressing the dynamism of the modern age while maintaining a profound respect for order and harmony. Born in Cortona, Italy, and trained under Giacomo Balla, Severini absorbed the principles of Divisionism before moving to Paris in 1906, where he joined the avant-garde circles of Montmartre and Montparnasse. There he developed close relationships with Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, sought to capture the pulse of a rapidly changing world. Severini’s Futurist masterpieces, including *Dynamic Hieroglyph of the Bal Tabarin* (1912), *Blue Dancer* (1912), and *Armored Train in Action* (1915), translate movement, music, and emotion into radiant, fractured forms that merge the color vibrations of Divisionism with the structural geometry of Cubism. After World War I, he evolved toward a more classical style, becoming a central figure in the “return to order” movement and articulating his artistic philosophy in the influential text *Du Cubisme au Classicisme* (1921), which argued that true modern art must unite intuition and intellect, freedom and discipline. His art embodies this synthesis—equally scientific and poetic, modern and timeless—demonstrating an unbroken dialogue between dynamism and stability. Severini’s later works in fresco and mosaic extended his vision into the architectural realm, while his writings and teaching shaped generations of artists seeking to balance structure and spontaneity. His ideas and techniques profoundly influenced later movements such as Kinetic Art, Op Art, and Abstract Expressionism, and his exploration of rhythm and optical vibration can be traced in the works of Victor Vasarely, Sonia Delaunay, and Bridget Riley. Exhibited internationally and held in the world’s leading collections—including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice)—Severini stands among the great innovators of his century. Alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he remains a towering figure in modern art history—a visionary who bridged the revolutionary energy of Futurism with the structural harmony of classicism. His highest auction record was achieved by *Danseuse, equilibre* (1914), which sold for $6.9 million USD at Sotheby’s, New York, on November 6, 2008, reaffirming his enduring reputation as one of the most dynamic, innovative, and collectible artists of modernism.
