Born into an aristocratic Roman family and trained in the classical academic tradition, Capogrossi initially pursued figurative painting before undergoing a transformative shift in the late 1940s that led to the creation of his groundbreaking glyph, a modular calligraphic sign that he applied with remarkable discipline across canvases, works on paper, tapestries, mosaics, and architectural murals. The glyph, neither literal letter nor symbol, became a universal visual element through which he investigated spatial dynamics, rhythm, tension, and the psychological weight of repetition, positioning him at the intersection of Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, geometric abstraction, and early conceptual mark making.
