About the Item
This exquisite lithograph by Graham Sutherland (1903–1980), titled The Cathedral I, from the album San Lazzaro et ses Amis, Hommage au fondateur de la revue XXe siecle (San Lazzaro and His Friends, Tribute to the Founder of the Journal XXe Siecle), originates from the 1975 edition published by XXe siecle, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, October 1975. The Cathedral I exemplifies Sutherland’s masterful synthesis of organic abstraction and spiritual symbolism, transforming the architectural grandeur of the cathedral into an emblem of transcendence and renewal. The composition radiates with the artist’s unique visual vocabulary—dynamic forms, luminous color, and rhythmic structure—conveying both the monumentality and mystery of sacred space.
Executed as a lithograph on velin d'Arches paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with modern masters including Picasso, Chagall, Miro, and Calder.

About the Publication:
San Lazzaro et ses Amis, Hommage au fondateur de la revue XXe siecle (San Lazzaro and His Friends, Tribute to the Founder of the Journal XXe Siecle), published in 1975 by XXe siecle, Paris, represents one of the most significant collaborative tributes in the history of modern art publishing. Conceived as a celebration of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s pioneering work in championing the avant-garde through his journal XXe Siecle, the portfolio brought together original lithographs by leading modernists such as Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Calder, Hartung, and Sutherland. Printed by the foremost ateliers of the period—Mourlot, Arte, Bellin, and Maeght—the album epitomizes the creative synergy between artist and publisher that defined the postwar era.
About the Artist:
Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) was a British painter, printmaker, and designer whose profound fusion of surrealism, symbolism, and modern abstraction defined him as one of the most visionary and psychologically compelling artists of the 20th century. Born in Streatham, London, Sutherland trained as an engraver at Goldsmiths’ College before turning to painting in the 1930s, when the revolutionary ideas of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray inspired him to move beyond realism toward a poetic and symbolic modernism. Deeply influenced by nature and the British landscape, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in organic form, transforming trees, roots, and geological structures into metaphors for vitality, fragility, and transformation. His early surrealist landscapes—imbued with the spiritual energy of Miro and the psychological tension of Dali—positioned him at the forefront of British modernism alongside Henry Moore and Paul Nash. As an official war artist during World War II, Sutherland produced haunting depictions of bombed cities and industrial ruins that became powerful visual meditations on destruction and resilience, earning him international acclaim. In the postwar years, his paintings grew increasingly monumental and expressive, culminating in his iconic Thorn Tree and Crucifixion series, which merged Christian iconography with modernist abstraction to explore suffering and redemption. His monumental tapestry Christ in Glory for Coventry Cathedral stands as one of the masterpieces of modern religious art, while his controversial portrait of Winston Churchill demonstrated his uncompromising psychological depth. Sutherland’s influence extended across generations, shaping the work of Francis Bacon, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, and later abstract and neo-romantic painters who admired his synthesis of emotion and intellect. Exhibited widely at the Venice Biennale, the Tate, and the Museum of Modern Art, his works are housed in major collections including the Tate Britain, Centre Pompidou, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Collectors prize his art for its luminous color, organic rhythm, and spiritual power—qualities that link him to the great innovators of modernism, including Picasso, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Calder, Giacometti, and Man Ray. His highest auction record was achieved by The Crucifixion (1946), which sold for $2.1 million at Christie’s, London, on February 7, 2011, reaffirming Graham Sutherland’s enduring legacy as one of the most visionary, expressive, and collectible British artists of the 20th century.

Graham Sutherland
Graham Sutherland OM was a prolific English artist. Notable for his paintings of abstract landscapes and for his portraits of public figures, Sutherland also worked in other media, including printmaking, tapestry, and glass design. Printmaking, mostly of romantic landscapes, dominated Sutherland's work during the 1920s. He developed his art by working in watercolors before switching to using oil paints in the 1940s. A series of surreal oil paintings depicting the Pembrokeshire landscape secured his reputation as a leading British modern artist.
