As a co-founder of the famed experimental artist group CoBrA - one of the significant european art movements of the 20th century, Corneille (Guillaume van Beverloo) became a leading abstract expressionist painter and printmaker.
Corneille has been linked to Klee's idea of finding a single formula to comprise man, beast, plants, earth, fire, water and air. His works include certain recurring exotic symbolic forms from his foreign travels.
For Corneille the woman's body is a source of mystery and desire and he developed a dense visual vocabulary of icons and symbols that mirrored the many meanings that the woman held for him.
Since his first solo show in 1946, he has enjoyed more than 190 one-man shows and four museum retrospectives.

Guillaume Corneille
Corneille, also known as Corneille Guillaume Beverloo, was a painter and graphic artist who radicalized the conservative Dutch art world in the early 1950s. He founded CoBrA in 1949, a post-war Expressionist European movement, along with five other influential artists that included Karel Appel and Constant. Born to Dutch parents in Liege, Belgium on July 3, 1922, Corneille went on to study art at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam in 1940, but is generally considered a self-trained painter. His approach is often described as imaginative and poetic, and is characterized by an eccentric use of color and his placing of familiar subjects, such as cats, birds, and women, in mythological or juvenile settings. “I am a painter of joy,” the artist declared at his 2007 exhibit at the Cobra Museum. He was notably influenced by African art, which he collected during his time traveling throughout the continent during the 1950s. His work was also affected by Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee, and, most notably, Vincent van Gogh’s use of color and form. His works are featured in collections at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in the Netherlands, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He died on September 5, 2010 in Paris, France.

After completing his studies at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1947, Pierre Alechinsky immediately became one of the founders and most active members of the CoBrA group . He began working with other members 'four-handed', especially with Appel and Dotremont, producing oil paintings filled with a multitude of small figures; his taste for ironical titles and curved lines was already becoming evident.
After Cobra disbanded, Alechinsky moved to Paris where he studied printmaking and moved in Surrealist circles. His work contains residual figurative motifs, such as goblins, reptiles of every description, volcanoes, and rushing streams. The beasts and geographical elements arouse disquiet as well as smiles of complicity.

I portray my vision of those things on that single moment witch surpasses time and place: only those details, the "brush strokes", Which connote the emotional strength of the scene are reproduced, and as directly as possible, without any vagueness.
