About the Item
"1981" ("Entwicklung Kunstwerk") is an original screen print on hand-made Japanese paper from 1981 by internationally acclaimed German ZERO group artist Günther Uecker. Small ddition 50 (18/50), originally signed, numbered and dated lower left hand. Framed to museum standard with silver platted frame with ash. Certificate. 64 x 54 cm framed.
Günther Uecker (born 1933) is a well-known German artist who exhibits internationally. He is best known for his undulating reliefs using hammered nails, the signature medium he began to explore in the late 1950s. Active while Piero Manzoni and Lucio Fontana were similarly turning to nontraditional materials and techniques, Uecker joined the avant-garde Group Zero in 1961 with Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. Influenced by studies of light, optics, oscillation, and electricity, Uecker has created series of “light nails” and light boxes, kinetic nails (including revolving sacks of nails), and kinetic installations and machines using sand and water. He also used nails to scratch motifs into wet paint and to turn furniture and objects into bristling sculptures. His works are found in museums worldwide.

Günther Uecker is a German artist and member of the ZERO movement best known for his signature use of nails arranged into tactile, sculptural paintings. Following an interest in Eastern philosophies, Uecker’s use of nails on canvas served as a meditative ritual, with the repetitive nature of hammering, transforming his theories into a lived artistic practice. First drawn to the socialist realism style of painting while studying in postwar Berlin, Uecker began creating reliefs in 1957. Born on March 13, 1930, in Wendorf, Germany, the artist met John Cage in 1959 who influenced the scope of his practice. In Uecker’s later work, the artist merely initiates a project and allows it to be taken where it needs to go—wherever that may be, even if it eventually is out of his hands. In 1961, after joining the ZERO group alongside Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, Uecker expanded his practice to include audience participation. Uecker’s works are held in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, among others.
