About the Item

Hans Hartung (Germany, 1904-1989) Olympische Spiele Munchen, 1972 Lithograph on paper Signed on plate 40.2 x 25.6 in. (102 x 65 cm.) Excellent condition, unframed Ref: HAR100-202 Hans Hartung was born in Leipzig into a family of physicists. His grandfather was also a self-taught painter and composer. Between 1915 and 1926, he studied classical languages at the Dresden Gymnasium and later pursued philosophy and art history at both the University of Leipzig and the Leipzig School of Fine Arts. He subsequently enrolled at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. In the summer of 1926, he traveled by bicycle through France, Italy, and Spain. His first solo exhibition took place in Dresden in 1931. In 1937, while participating in a group exhibition at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, he met the renowned Spanish sculptor Julio González, who became a profound influence on him. González provided him with both guidance and encouragement to pursue his own artistic path. During the pre-war period, Hartung settled in Paris to escape the Nazi regime and exhibited in several galleries. In 1938, he took part in an anti-Nazi exhibition at the New Burlington Gallery in London. In 1939, he was imprisoned in Spain and later enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. In 1944, he was severely wounded during the siege of Belfort, resulting in the loss of a leg. After the war, he became a French citizen, and in 1947, he held a major solo exhibition in Paris. From the beginning, Hartung distanced himself from the Bauhaus movement, which he regarded as a passing trend. His paintings, characterized by pure abstraction, embodied his belief that free and unfiltered expression must transcend reality. One of his defining techniques was the rapid brushstroke, an essential element of his artistic process. For Hartung, speed in creation was, in his own words, "a spiritual necessity" Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Guggenheim Prize in 1956 and the Grand Prix Internationale at the Venice Biennale in 1960.
