Caviar20 is excited to be offering this exceptional "Single Autographic Print" from 1954.
It is the earliest "SAP" we've handled and come directly from the estate of Harold Town.
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group.
While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse ever-changing.
Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monoprints - which he called "Single Autographic Prints"
Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen.
The "Single Autographic Prints" were first exhibited in 1954. Two years later the National Gallery of Canada would successfully nominate Town to represent the nation at the Venice Biennale.
By the end of the decade Town received international accolades for these works and had become one of the most admired artists in Canada.
This example of a "Single Autographic Print" is an exceptional example of the work that established Harold Town.
An essential work for a collection of post-war Canadian abstraction.

Harold Town
Harold Town remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the Painters Eleven group. This complex mauve-hued example of a Single Autographic Print is Harold Town at his best; layered, rich colors creating a hypnotic inimitable abstract surface. This type of SAP is particularly sought-after as it is one of the earliest and features a distinct graphic collage-like composition made up of blocky shapes. Such elements would become signatures in Town's oeuvre. An essential work for any collection of post-war Canadian abstraction.

Kenneth Noland (1924 – 2010) is one of the most important artists and contributors to the evolution of American abstraction. He is one of the most beloved and enduring figures in the Color-Field movement.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, such as Helen Frankenthaler and Sam Gilliam, Noland nearly rejected printmaking until later in his career. And once Noland began collaborating with the printmakers at Tyler Graphics (and other studios) he was more interested in using their applications to make unique one-of-a-kind artworks.
This unique and intimately-scaled monotype is an excellent example of Noland's signature forms and aesthetic from the late 1970s/early 1980s. The chevron was a frequently employed motif of his, first debuting around 1963 and realized repeatedly through the years in different styles and medium.
Here, Noland dissolves the strict geometric lines of his signature chevron or pointed "V", overwhelming the structure with color that appears to be either smeared, splattered or scraped. Lavender, pale rose, mauve, cornflower, chartreuse, ocean blue, ivory and pearl shift into and out of each other, yet avoiding the clear-cut stacked triangular outline of his signature chevron arrangement.
Noland's chevrons are some of the most iconic and desirable works in the 20th-century art canon. This piece is a fine example of one of Noland's creations that showcases his ingenuity and mastery of color.
