This four color limited edition offset lithograph poster was printed by the legendary Kenneth Tyler Graphics Inc. and published in 1981 exclusively for the Chicago International Art Exposition at Navy Pier. It is on 300 gram Dove 500 white acid free, 100% cotton fiber paper; lithographic, rather than wove paper, which is much higher quality. Navy Pier alternatively referred to this poster as KT-1, or the 1st one printed by publisher Kenneth Tyler.

Jack Tworkov
Jack Tworkov, a literate man uncertain whether to become a poet or painter. Tworkov became an Abstract Expressionist who is known for that style modified with gridlike restraint of forms and low-key color. Tworkov was also an art educator. From 1963–69, Tworkov was Chair of the Art Department at Yale University and he also held teaching positions at Queens College, 1948–51; Black Mountain College, summer of 1952; Pratt Institute, 1955–58; 1972 and American Academy in Rome. Except for temporary periods, Tworkov lived primarily in New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts. At Yale, where Tworkov was Visiting Professor of Art from 1961–63 and Department Chair from 1963–69, he was stirred by questions of the interrelationship of psychology, education, political history and art creativity and as a result, instigated cross-disciplinary study. Among the future 'big-name' artists Tworkov mentored were Jennifer Bartlet, Robert Mangold, Chuck Close and Nancy Graves. Tworkov was born in Biala, Poland, and at the age of 13 immigrated to New York City wherein 1928, he became a US citizen. Tworkov studied at Columbia University from 1920–23, majoring in English. Tworkov left Columbia to attend the National Academy of Design from 1923–25 and 1925–26 at the Art Students League. During this period, Tworkov did landscapes, still lifes, portraits and figure studies that show the influence of European modernism, especially the paintings of Paul Cezanne. From 1935–41, Tworkov worked in the Easel Division of the WPA Federal Art Project and by the 1940s was deeply involved in Abstract Expressionism with work characterized by broad, spontaneous brush strokes. Tworkov loved the camaraderie of painting, especially with Karl Knaths, Franz Kline and Willem DeKooning, the latter with whom he had an adjoining studio from 1948–53. However, in the early 1940s, his career like that of so many was interrupted by military service, which he served as a tool designer. In 1958, Tworkov established a permanent studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts and worked there from May to November until he died in 1977. In 1963, as Chair of the Yale Art Department, Tworkov became close to Josef Albers whose Geometric Abstraction influenced his style of small, measured brush strokes. Tworkov was determined to subvert his individuality into a coherent, measured system, which meant he was much less spontaneous than most of his peer Abstract Expressionists.

Biography:
Robert Motherwell was born January 24, 1915, in Aberdeen, Washington. He was awarded a fellowship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles at age 11, and in 1932 studied painting briefly at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Motherwell received a B.A. from Stanford University in 1937 and enrolled for graduate work later that year in the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931.
Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies.
