About

An original signed twelve color lithograph on Rives gray Newsprint paper by American artist Jasper Johns (1930-) titled "#2 (after 'Untitled 1975')", 1976. Hand pencil signed by Johns lower right and numbered lower left. Limited edition: AP 15/15. (An artist's proof aside from the standard edition of 60). Comes from the 1976 portfolio: "6 Lithographs (after 'Untitled 1975')", (Field No. 249-254) a series of six lithographs. Printed by Edward Henderson assisted by Mark Stock and James Webb of Gemini G.E.L. and published by Gemini G.E.L. Los Angeles, CA, 1976. Collaboration and supervision: Serge Lozingot. Processing and proofing: Edward Henderson, Serge Lozingot, Mark Stock, James Webb and Anthony Zepeda. Stamped and inscribed on verso: Copyright Gemini G.E.L. 1976; 'JJ76-783'. Gemini G.E.L. chopmark/blindstamp lower right. Provenance: private collection - Los Angeles, CA. Reference: Richard S. Field, "Jasper Johns: Prints 1970-1977", No. 250, page 117; Gemini No. 741. Please mind some glare and reflections in photos. This work is presented in its original frame, all archival. Museum mounted, floated, within a wood moulding frame with plexiglass. Framed size: 37.25" x 36.75". Sheet size: 30" x 29.75". Strong rich colors, very clean sheet. This artwork is in excellent condition. Rare. This lithograph was printed in gray, yellow, red, blue, transparent yellow, transparent red, transparent blue, varnish, varnish, varnish, white, and a fourth varnish plate. All plates used for colors were drawn with tusche and lithographic crayon. With colors 2 through 7, top center and bottom center were produced transferring the corresponding areas from the same colored plates used on JJ76-780 to a new plate, which was then counter-stretched and added to. The 1976 series "6 Lithographs (after 'Untitled 1975')" are derived from "Untitled", a 1975 oil and encaustic on canvas painting (four panels) by Jasper Johns which measures 50.13" x 50.13". It is currently apart of the permanent collection at the Broad Museum, Los Angeles, CA. Jasper Johns (born May 15, 1930) is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker associated with Abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop art. Johns is well known for his depictions of the American flag and other US-related topics. Johns' works regularly receive millions of dollars at sale and auction, including a reported $110 million sale in 2010. At multiple times works by Johns have held the title of most paid for a work by a living artist. Johns has received many honors throughout his career, including receipt of the National Medal of Arts in 1990, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
