The image reproduced on this print is Johns' 1962 lithograph edition "Painting with Two Balls I", (ULAE No. 8; Field No. 8; Sparks No. 8, page 348). This facsimile print was made at and by Universal Limited Art Editions in West Islip, NY under the supervision of the artist Jasper Johns himself.
Tatyana Grosman started Telamon Editions Limited in 1970 as a commercial venture of Universal Limited Art Editions. It was closed upon her death in 1982. Among her initial projects was a facsimile catalogue of Jasper Johns prints published by ULAE. The format for the catalogue was 22.5 x 17.5 inches and was to be printed in an edition of 300 on the same paper as the original limited editions prints. A hand-fed offset press was purchased in 1971 to proof and print the project. 13 facsimiles were printed on the hand-fed offset press by Bill Goldston and James V. Smith under the supervision of the artist before 1982 when it was abandoned for the complete catalogue raisonne published in 1993. Other than their size, the paper, color and printing sequence match the original edition. The facsimiles are not signed by the artist and the Telamon Editions Limited seal appears within the images to ensure no confusion with the original editions.

Biography:
Frank Stella (1936-) is an American artist best known for his use of geometric patterns and shapes in creating both paintings and sculptures. Arguably one of the most influential living American artists, Stella’s works utilize the formal properties of shape, color, and composition to explore non-literary narratives, as seen in his work Harrar II (1967) from the Protractor series. “Abstraction didn't have to be limited to a kind of rectilinear geometry or even a simple curve geometry. It could have a geometry that had a narrative impact. In other words, you could tell a story with the shapes,” he explained. “It wouldn't be a literal story, but the shapes and the interaction of the shapes and colors would give you a narrative sense. You could have a sense of an abstract piece flowing along and being part of an action or activity.” Born on May 12, 1936 in Malden, MA, Stella went on to study history at Princeton University before moving to New York in 1958. Having moved to the city, Stella was immersed in the heyday Abstract Expressionism, but it was the work of Jasper Johns that inspired Stella’s Black...

Provenance: private collection - New York, NY; private collection - notable fashion illustrator Jay Hyde, Crawford, New York, NY; acquired from an art gallery in New York, NY; likely acquired directly from the publisher Universal Limited Art Editions, West Islip, NY. Lithograph drawn with tusche wash. Printed in two colors from two stones: red and green. Universal Limited Art Editions chop mark/blind stamp lower right.
"Frankenthaler: A Catalogue Raisonné - Prints 1961-1994" - Harrison - "Frankenthaler carefully chose a European handmade paper that would add another color and texture to the print" ... "By contrast, in "Altitudes", the artist created a bleed image so that the sheet of paper is smaller than the stone's image and the large red tusche wash sweeps across the surface of the yellow-pink J.B. Green Hayle Mill Bodleian paper, becoming warmed and enhanced by its color and texture."
"Universal Limited Art Editions - A History and Catalogue: The First Twenty-Five Years" - Sparks - "In "Bronze Smoke" (cat. no. 32), "Altitudes" (cat. no. 33), and "Door" (cat. no. 34), minimal compositions were replaced by fields of drifting, multilayered color, as rich and satisfying as her work on a much grander scale."
