A Javier Arévalo Lithograph Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico - 1937 The State Secretary of Education and Culture in Jalisco on seeing the talents of 11-year old Javier at a painting contest proposed to Javier's father that he enter the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, bypassing high school. But this suggestion was refused and Arévalo was to remain in Guadalajara attending the Escuela de Artes y Letras and earning money with anatomy drawings for the Faculty of Medicine and as a draftsman and lithographer. It wasn't until 1961 that he was to enter the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas de San Carlos after which he had the opportunity to travel to Chile with a group under the direction of the muralist Jorge Gonzalez Camarena. In 1966 Arévalo participated in the controversial "Confrontacion 66" in the Museo Nacional del Palacio de Bellas Artes, an exhibition of selected artists representative of the currents trends and considered a defining moment between modern and contemporary art. 4 years later Arévalo was named Director de Artes Plasticas de la Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Michoacan in Morelia and less than a decade later, after a time living in New York, he was named the head of the Lithograph Department in that same prestigious academy. This renown painter and respected teacher has a curriculum that shows more than 60 exhibitions in various countries and participation in various biennales. (Expo Mundial de Pintura, Montreal, Bienal de Pintura, Paris and Bienal of Tokyo (1970) where he won first prize in printmaking.) An inveterate traveler, his work is often characterized by magic realism and abundant originality in his subject matter, texture, composition and color. Among his many awards, he has been honored with recognition for his work in various cultural institutions such as Museo Nacional del Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Museo Nacional de la Estampa both in Mexico City and the Instituto Cultural Cabañas in Guadalajara, his hometown. The exhibition "Yo el Pintor, Retrospectiva de Javier Arevalo" at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1990, reunited works spanning a 40-year trajectory. Works of this artist can be found in important museums collections such as Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, Modern Art Museum, Lugano Switzerland, Museum of Art, Nagaoka, Japan, to name a few. This work is signed and dated and is number 88 in an edition of 100.
