About the Item
"Pygmalion's Ladder" - Surrealist Colored Etching 9/20, 1975
In this etching, a figure in soft blue could be interpreted as the sculptor surrounded by their creations by James C. Crabb (American, b. 1947).
In Greek mythology, Pygmalion is a legendary figure of Cyprus. He is most familiar from Ovid's narrative poem Metamorphoses, in which Pygmalion is a sculptor who makes an ivory statue representing his ideal of womanhood and then falls in love with his own creation, which he names Galatea. The goddess Aphrodite brings the statue to life in answer to his prayer.
Jim Crabb (American, b. 1947) is a painter and printmaker, was born in Merced, California. He received his M.A. in printmaking and B.A. in painting at San Jose State, and an A.A. in Fine Arts at San Jose City College. He studied with Geoffrey Bowman, John Hunter, Will Nelson, Al Barella, and Bruce Conner.
Crabb's work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including American Drawings in Black and White: 1970-1980, at the Brooklyn Museum, the Twenty-first National Print Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, as well as at the Redding Museum of Art, the San Jose Council of the Arts, the Basel Art Fair in Switzerland, 1976, and Georgia State University. Public collections holding Crabb's work include the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Wichita Art Museum in Kansas, the Redding Art Museum, the Crocker Museum, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California.
