About the Item

The installation, Orchestrations, explores the vernacular in vintage piano roles. As a response to the exhibition’s name and focus, Heliotrope, the physical perforations in the piano roll paper, coded notations for sound, act as a vehicle for light transmissions thus translating orchestrated music into orchestrated light. The work is “played” or activated throughout the day, by the variations and nuances of the sun’s rays. In site-specific exhibitions, public art commissions and collaborative projects Jo Yarrington uses varied combinations of glass, waxed surfaces, found objects and experimental analog photography to investigate the way we perceive objects and images through our senses. These predominately translucent materials function as both a physical framework and symbolic membrane with implications of scale and the integration of architecture as pivotal components. The transmission of images and images formed through optical phenomena are primary elements and are manifested through projection, reflection and refraction. Recent projects have explored environmental issues and the relationship of language and image. Yarrington’s drawings, photographs, and architecturally-based installations have been shown in exhibitions including the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT, Yale University, CT, the Rotunda Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, MA, Grounds for Sculpture, NJ, and the William Benton Museum of Art, CT. International exhibitions have included Galeria Sala Uno, Italy, Centro de las Artes de Guanajuato, Mexico, Christuskirche, Germany, Glasgow School of Art, Scotland. 2016 exhibitions include Heliotrope at ODETTA, Brooklyn, NY, Edition Tools at the Project Space Gallery, State University of New York at Oneonta and the Containment and Spillage Series, a solo collaborative exhibition at the Humanities Gallery, Long Island University Brooklyn. The artist is a recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, most notably the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, the Bronze Prize at the International Biennial Exhibition of Photographic Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, Macedonia and in 2012 she was represented in the Berlin Biennial . Jo Yarrington is a Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT and lives and works in New York City and Norwalk, CT.

STATEMENT In site-specific exhibitions, public art commissions, collaborative and individual projects Jo Yarrington has used varied combinations of glass, waxed surfaces, found artifacts and experimental analog photography to investigate the way we perceive – searching for, experimenting with and developing throughout a sensory-based vernacular. Her mostly translucent materials function as physical framework and symbolic membrane. Light, both natural and ambient, provides a kinetic or time-based element to her work. Scale and the integration of architecture are also pivotal components. In the 6-part installation for the two-person exhibition Illuminated, Yarrington continues her interest in the connections between vision, sound and language. In Mute-ability: Compositions 1 – 6, her title for this light-based comprehensive work, she combines the words mute and malleability. The work focuses on found piano rolls, a music storage medium, originally conceived as coded notations or ‘note control data’ for music produced in pneumatic player pianos...
