About the Item

This exquisite lithograph after Juan Gris (1887–1927), titled La Pipe (The Pipe), from the folio Au Soleil du Plafond (In the Sunlight of the Ceiling), originates from the 1955 edition published by Editions Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, February 4, 1955. The composition captures Gris’s refined balance between geometry and emotion, depicting the simple motif of a pipe as an intricate harmony of planes, light, and shadow. In La Pipe, Gris transforms the everyday object into a meditative exploration of structure and rhythm—an enduring example of his mastery in translating the visual language of Cubism into lyrical precision. Executed as a lithograph on velin des papeteries d'Arches paper, this work measures 16.93 x 12.99 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the foremost modernists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Juan Gris (1887–1927) Title: La Pipe (The Pipe), from Au Soleil du Plafond (In the Sunlight of the Ceiling), 1955 Medium: Lithograph on velin des papeteries d'Arches paper Dimensions: 16.93 x 12.99 inches Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1955 Publisher: Editions Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne reference: Kahnweiler, Daniel-Henry. Juan Gris: His Life and Work. Abrams, 1969, illustration 26 Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Au Soleil du Plafond (In the Sunlight of the Ceiling), published by Editions Verve, Paris, February 4, 1955 Notes: Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), This album, finished writing in the present form, was born more than thirty years after it was conceived by its authors, and Juan Gris, who had assumed the illustration, died in 1927, having been able to execute only half of his work. This is why the XX poems are accompanied, in this album, by only XI lithographs, one of which, le moulin a cafe, appearing on the frontispiece, was the first project subsequently modified by the painter. This first project was executed in 1916 or 1917. The lack of these XX illustrations forced us to make a completely different presentation of the work which, according to the first design, was to consist of XX plates on rigid cardboard in the form of prints, each poem underlining the engraving concerning it. This book therefore constitutes in the work of Juan Gris, a unique document and, in our minds, a tribute to the memory of a friend who died prematurely. This handwritten album by Pierre Reverdy, illustrated by Juan Gris, was completed to print on February 4, 1955, on the presses of Mourlot Freres, for the Editions Verve. This work was printed on velin des papeteries d'Arches, with CCV examples, numbered from I to CCV. The first XLV examples include a sequel to the illustrations on Chine paper. In addition, XV non-commerce examples, numbered from I to XV were drawn. All examples are signed by Pierre Reverdy on the colophon. About the Publication: Au Soleil du Plafond (In the Sunlight of the Ceiling) (1955) is a rare and historically significant Verve folio uniting the poetic text of Pierre Reverdy with the visual mastery of Juan Gris. Originally conceived in the early 1920s as a collaborative project between the poet and the painter, the work remained unfinished at Gris’s death in 1927. Nearly three decades later, under the direction of Teriade, Editions Verve realized the long-intended publication, preserving the integrity and intimacy of the original conception while presenting it as a posthumous homage to Gris. The folio features Reverdy’s handwritten text paired with eleven lithographs after Gris’s preparatory drawings and paintings, printed with the technical brilliance of Mourlot Freres. The edition, executed on velin des papeteries d'Arches, stands as a testament to Gris’s enduring precision and poetic structure, as well as to Teriade’s commitment to preserving the highest standards of artistic collaboration between literature and fine art. About the Artist: Juan Gris (1887–1927) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and draughtsman whose precise geometry, crystalline compositions, and lyrical intellect made him one of the defining figures of Cubism and a pivotal force in the development of modern art. Born Jose Victoriano Gonzalez-Perez in Madrid, Gris trained as an engineer and mechanical draftsman before moving to Paris in 1906, where he immersed himself in the city’s dynamic avant-garde alongside Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Fernand Leger. Combining scientific precision with poetic expression, he brought a new sense of clarity, balance, and luminosity to Cubism, transforming it from an analytical experiment into a harmonious visual language of order and emotion. Influenced by Paul Cezanne’s structural approach to form and guided by his own background in mathematics and design, Gris developed a distinctly intellectual style that united architecture, music, and painting through geometric rhythm and color. His still lifes, portraits, and collages demonstrate a meticulous synthesis of logic and lyricism, each composition constructed with architectural precision yet alive with musical resonance. Active in the fertile artistic circles of early 20th-century Paris, Gris maintained close creative dialogue with leading modernists including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, all of whom shared his passion for abstraction and innovation. Though his career was tragically brief, his influence extended far beyond his lifetime, inspiring artists such as Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Diebenkorn, and generations of minimalist and color-field painters who admired his mastery of form and harmony. Gris’s work remains celebrated in major museum collections worldwide—including MoMA, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou—for its disciplined beauty and timeless clarity. His highest auction record was achieved by Nature morte a la nappe a carreaux (1915), which sold for $56.6 million at Christie’s, New York, on November 4, 2014.
